I know three little girls named Loulou.

As for the old lady names, I love the name Agnes but my husband vetoed it for our daughter. So far we have only met one other girl with my daughter's name and she is 3 years older.

I just don't get why people would name their children such names... Jezebel is another one, or Saul i. e.


I love, love, love the name Delilah, but unfortunately I just can't get past the biblical connotations (and we're not particularly religious).

Not to mention, my moral majority relatives would probably report me for child abuse.




Delilah is on our short list for DD #2 and my mom has been very vocal about how much she hates it because of the biblical reference. We're not religious and I don't even know the story (though I should probably look into it. . .) so don't care that much because I think it's pretty.


We're not too much into Modern History and I'm not very familiar with the story behind the name either so I'll just stick to what sound cute with our last name. DS's name will be Adolf.

We have a nine-year-old Sophia, and there has never been another Sophia in any of her classes, summer camp, choirs, etc. Of course, she is many years older than the preschoolers.

I should note that, while Sophia is a family name, we did check on its popularity back in 2001. We might not have gone with the name then had it been as popular then as it is now.

Freakonomics teaches us that it is important to choose names suggestive of socioeconomic class lest we reduce our children's future employment prospects. Thus, we are probably limited to one or two hundred names. If, in addition, we all try to be contrarion in choosing a name from that limited pool, we will likely generate waves of popularity of certain names.

The solution is clear: DCUM should add a random name assignment feature that will ensure uniform distribution of the couple of hundred suitable names among our children.

It's 54% AA, which leaves a lot of white families. White families may choose from among a smaller number of names, which pushes their picks to the top of the list.


Exactly. Also, among the names popular with AA families, it is likely that many variant spellings are used, pushing even very popular AA names down the list.

We are considering a "classic" name for DD #2 that is not in the top 1000 but was in the top 10 in 1890. It was my great aunt's name.


My great aunt's names are pretty common again.

All were born in the 1880's and 1890's. My grandmothers (born 1901 and 1906) were both named Mary.

As far as common names go my mother is a 1940's Carol. She always hated that name and when she would ask her mother why she named her Carol my grandmother would always reply the same way. "Because I didn't want to name you Barbara" Like there were only two options.

I know kids with those names. For what it's worth, I know people my age (35) with these names: Wren, Eden, Louisa, Orion, Levi, Kai, Frances, Daisy and Amelia.


And, a number of those were babies born this year: Rowan, Luca, and Felix off the top of my head.



CRAP. DS's name is on this list. He's now 5 1/2 and we'd made it this far without meeting any others with his name. It's stupid, but not having an overly common name for our kids was VERY important to this early 1970s Jennifer.
