Private schools have switched from looking for diversity through the entire school to include education and are almost primarily looking for minority athletes to increase their diversity % and entertain the students, alumni and staff at the same time.
One of the player's dads on Bullis brags about how he got the best scholarship deal out of Bullis by putting race first. His teammate on the Hawks' dad did the exact same thing. It's not much of a secret.
DEI is almost never used to reference minority athletes, but it is used when minority candidates are given priority first in skilled fields like medicine or flying a plane based on the color of their skin rather than merit.
