The GFM is $2.1M. I love that this will make heads explode.

So I don’t blame his wife for starting a Godfundme. She’s doing what she can to support her family. If you’re mad, blame the people donating.

Don’t they live on a multi-million dollar ranch?

If she sold and downsized to a normal home they probably come out ahead; I think its a hobby farm not an actual source of income?

He also has a $4M penthouse in BH as a rental?

Or did they sell it all for treatment — do they not have health insurance?

$4M is not a whole lot of money. I’m sure there is a mortgage on it. They are reporting he spent down his fortune trying to save his life.

No, insurance doesn’t cover all treatments of your stay close to a treatment facility. My uncle lives in Jackson hole and he had to rent a house near his treatment.

He put out a very sad video about how much self worth he put into being a provider and great dad and he now was neither and he needs to love himself anyway.

I mean i understand its not never work again money, but it just feels odd giving that much money to someone with $2-3M in assets. The condo for example was bought for $1.9M, so they have at least $2M in equity, unless they refi for cash to pay medical treatments.

Did he really plough theough $3-$4M in treatment costs over the last few years? i wonder if they were scammed, it would be terrifying to leave your young family like this and susceptible to being taken advantage

The reality is people who think they have enough money shouldn’t give. People in their orbit will understand and give.

Again. Raising 6 kids on $4M is not a whole lot.

TF? Most people with 6 kids won't make $4 million in their lifetimes...

And their kids are probably a lost cause. To do it right you need money.

More like they were already living above their means for some time without reliable income and then he got cancer. The BH property probably isn’t paid off and the rental income is needed to keep their Texas ranch afloat. I doubt that can access the equity without losing the compound, which might be inevitable but something the gofundme is trying to postpone.

How do you know they paid cash for the condo? This is a pointless exercise. Think about why you're so mad about a dead man. It's a pretty bad look.

Get your colonoscopy. Follow your med team’s recommendations of gold standard treatment.

* Unless you are diagnosed in your thirties or early 40s
* Unless your doctors write off your symptoms as acid reflux or IBS
* Unless the cancer has metastasized to other organs like the liver and the lungs
* Unless you have a gene mutation that makes your tumor less likely to respond to chemotherapy
* Unless your cancer has metastasized and is no longer resectable

Stage 3 colon cancer (is not stage 4) is statistically a beatable cancer. Of course it's not a 100% guarantee.
Get your colonoscopy.

I don't know the full story of his cancer. But I have had cancer that is considered "curable". It has a 90% 5 year survival rate in fact, which is very high. That still means 10 out 100 people DIE FROM THE CANCER. So having a statistically beatable cancer does not save every single person who get the cancer. Statistics are not personal and *someone* is the 1% or 5%. Maybe he was reckless, maybe he didn't get screen at the exact right time, maybe he used juice instead of chemo. I don't know. But what I do know is that everyone is so hell bent on pretending that they are doing everything right, therefore they are safe. Cancer does not always work like that.

This. My father died from a cancer that had a 95% chance of permanent remission post-surgery and an even higher 5 year survival rate. He was one of the unlucky very, very few.

It’s a coping mechanism. People want to think nothing will happen to them if they do “everything” right. But it doesn’t work that way. Sometimes you get the unlucky card.

The youngest child is 4. I think with six kids the goal is for her NOT to work, and it makes a lot of sense when widowed so young with so many young children. I hope they raise all the money they need. By all accounts he was a really great guy and beloved by everyone who knew him.

+1 I hope they raise enough so she never has to work, and all the costs are taken care of.

Why exactly?

NP- why do you need/want her to work? Why wish a harder life on her exactly? In a perfect world anyone in her situation would be better off not working as they are navigating grief and raising young kids UNLESS they find joy and fulfillment in their occupation.

I agree that when you have 6 kids, it becomes much less possible that you work out of the home.

That said, if this was a Black or Hispanic Tv star who had died an early death of cancer whose wife was now asking for money, rather than a blonde, I am pretty sure the tone of comments would be different and that there would be more people questioning why more planning ahead hadn’t been done before doing a GoFundme.

Maybe there WAS planning ahead. But six kids is a lot of mouths to feed. A lot of bodies to clothe.

I am sure this was planned well in advance, knowing their financial situation, that they would use this opportunity/attention to solicit donations at the moment it would get peak attention and response. James would likely have thought of it as a last thing he could do for his children’s futures. Perhaps that gave him some peace.

I am not going to judge anyone who takes advantage of an opportunity to lessen their financial insecurity. Each person who donated, did so of their own free will and desire to help.

If he could have purchased adequate life insurance when they had their first kid like the rest of us do.

What is WRONG with you?

Sure did.

Why didn’t it work? Was it just too late? This is so sad.

Cancer that shows up in a person’s 40s is often not found early because it’s before the age of general screenings and symptoms are dismissed because cancer is unusual at that age.

Chemo often only extends lifespan after diagnosis. Cancer can’t always be cured, and that can be true regardless of when it’s found. Every fifty-something knows peers who’ve died from cancer. It’s very sad, but it’s what happens.
