We know. You’d rather have the bitter inflexible working mom brigade. Because everyone shares your personal opinions and you can empathize with those unlike yourself. You’ll open those childcare centers in an icy blizzard with 2 feet of snow so you don’t miss any billable hours. That’ll show everyone.
DP
No, but we will open them when it rains and will also open them less than 3 days after snow has ended.
We at least won't keep them closed after high schools open up. Delays should really mean they open up 30 minutes before high schools so teachers have some chance to get to get to school without being massively late.
Then, offer the minimum wage child care worker rides and get out to the school site with a shovel and clear it for everyone.
If people can get to high schools, why can't they get to elementary schools?
What do high schools have to do with it? If they are all delayed two hours or closed that gives the workers more time to get there or clear. Why can’t you pay one of the child care workers to come to your house and uber them if they don’t drive. Problem solved.
You clearly don't understand how child care works or how high schools work. Do you work in Central Office because that totally tracks.
Yes, I do and I’ve worked in child care. Clearly you haven’t given your unreasonable expectations of minimum wage workers. Bottom line you need a back up care taker.
Your high school comments make no sense. If you need child care you don’t have kids in high school.
Omg you are unbelievably clueless. Who do you think is staffing high schools?
The discussion is about child care and high school students don’t need child care so two separate issues. Child care centers are not in high schools. Everyone is on a delay from their original start times.
Are you really so obvious that you don't realize at the exact same time kids were going into high schools, MCPS was still prohibiting child care operators from opening? They didn't get to operate on a delay. They had to close for the morning. Why? We'll probably never know because the BoE isn't going to ask questions that make him look incompetent.
One has nothing to do with the other. Many am child care workers have other jobs so they also may not have had the staffing.
Now you're changing your argument. You concede it was safe, but think people had to go to other jobs?
That sounds like an issue for the child care provider when they're hiring for the job. I don't know any that wouldn't open when MCPS let them.
No, it’s an issue for you as you are demanding child care outside the agreed times
If you weren't a SAHP, you'd know the providers specifically tell parents to they'll open on delays when MCPS lets them. But you seem to revel in your ignorance. That's probably also why you couldn't hold down a job.

Of course I know that. But, Mcps determined it was a safety issue as it’s their property so you need a back up like the rest of us.
So, please post your BOE candidate website. Thanks
Being unemployed isn't a back up plan, but I'm sure you've spent your whole life coming up with excuses for why you couldn't work.

DP-- the issue is that MCPS said (and you are also saying) "Totally safe for high schools to be open at 9. Totally safe for all-day child care programs in MCPS buildings to be open at 9. But it would be so horribly dangerous to open any beforecares before 11 so we must prohibit them from opening, even in places where it is only raining.". How do you justify that?
Again this has nothing to do with high schools. You need a back up child care plan. How do you justify risking minimum wage workers lives so you can make a few hundred an hour and never be responsible for your kids?
Oh, you're definitely the troll who was on here that morning taunting and laughing at working parents and completely ignoring any logic. Buzz off. Of course it is. It's the same poster that complained about reopening after covid, too. She has a distinct tone.
This poster constantly complains about child care. They need to make a back up plan like the rest of us do. Mcps is school, not child care. They rest of us figure it out, why can’t they?
Thank you for demonstrating so clearly why it is bad to put SAHPs on the BoE.

Buzz off. (And everyone else, I'd suggest ignoring her... she clearly gets some kind of weird thrill out of upsetting people, let's not give her the satisfaction. I know it's hard to ignore someone who's simultaneously so wrong and so offensive, but then you're just giving her what she wants.)
Of course it is. It's the same poster that complained about reopening after covid, too. She has a distinct tone.

Those who want change will actively be advocating for county, state, and district policy that moves change, and aligning expectation appropriately.
For example, if they want correct oversight then they will pay the BOE members a salary worthy of the time to do so, thus attracting more candidates. They will also provide the funding so those persons have the appropriate staff to be able to ensure said oversight.
They will be actively paying attention to MSDE policy that is going to then drive policy and operations in districts. They will be paying attention to budget from a position of analyzing needs, tradeoffs, and wants.
But what we have is people complaining about getting a new school.
Oversight isn't a full time job. What corporate board of directors put anything remotely close to full time in?
The school board professional staff need to be pulled outside the superintendent's sphere of influence. Elected positions need to be truly part time, facilitating working parents to have those roles.
They aren’t going to work 40 hours a week and some have full time jobs double dipping with the county. What is your obsession over working parents? Better to have an involved educated stay at home parent truly committed as they have more time. A board job is not a living wage.
It shouldn't be. Board positions should reflect community members with kids in school. That isn't retirees that have no skin in the game. And SAHPs have very different equities than typical parents.
A committed, but misguided, board member can easily do more damage than incompetent board members. I definitely don't want to see SAHPs or retirees on the board.
So, who don't you hate? You think a high educated SAHP cannot do it. That speaks volumes. I don't want a working parent who is hyper focused on advancing their career. The retirees make no sense as they don't have a clue.
A highly educated SAHP might be very effective in the position toward achieving their goals. But I'm not convinced we would have the same goals. A family with a SAHP has a very different set of equities and challenges than a typical family. We've always seen one recent example where this came through: school closures during covid.
families with SAHPs should not be over represented on the board.
How many MCPS teachers died from COVID? There is a number. But it’s a secret. Who do you think is keeping that number a secret?
I think there was a good number and we knew a few.
However bashing a person for staying at home makes no sense and Covid is not relevant. If you cared about people with health issuest do, the MVA would not have closed.
This is what I meant. SAHPs have very different equities than typical families. No one else wanted to continue throwing money at MVA.
Having virtual classes could help a lot of us who don’t have access to classes at their home schools.
no, they don’t have different equities, they just make different choices than you do and you need to feel better about your life choices by putting down others. It’s really not a big deal to make life choices to allow one parent to stay home at a pay level, especially with child and elderly care costs.
My point wasn't to relitigate MVA. Luckily we're past that. But the example demonstrates the problem with having SAHP on the board. They're out of touch and would have very different priorities compared to what is important to most families.
You are the problem. How can someone who cannot relate to other families choices be a good fit? Mcps has a very diverse parental and not all work for different reasons.
You think you are superior, run for BOE.
That is exactly my point! SAHPs can't relate to the problems and needs of most students and families. Your continued defense of spending money on MVA demonstrates that quite well.
DP, but I don’t know why you think your opinion is fact. My husband is a working parent, as are friends, relatives etc. We are not that different and just all want the best for our kids. It sounds like you maybe don’t know many actual SAHPs and have just created this stereotype in contrast to yourself wherein you have problems and needs that this fictitious SAHP doesn’t have.
Another DP here. I certainly disagree with stereotypes about SAHPs but to say a family with a SAHP is exactly the same as a family where both (or the only) parent is working is not true. The difference is the need for non-parental child care and the awareness of what happens when MCPS pulls the rug out from under working parents, including its own employees, when it refuses to allow child care providers to operate.
No one said all families are the same. But the role of the BOE members, which is what we were discussing, is to exercise oversight for the students, staff and school system. If you consider the goal, it shouldn’t matter whether the BOE member is personally a SAHP or WOHP. They’re not the ones making operational decisions on inclement weather days, so I’m not sure why this example was raised. And all working parents are not a monolith. They have different schedules, flexibilities, different age kids, different co-parent arrangements, etc. Parents of high schoolers may have different preferences than parents of elementary schoolers on certain topics. Even super similar demographic families may have different preferences on grading policies, cell phone policies, SROs, boundary decisions, so on and so forth. I’m not sure why the other poster wants to single out SAHPs.
I personally have nothing against a SAHP serving on the BOE, but to suggest the BOE should consist of SAHPs and retirees is also pretty ridiculous. Yes, since BOE jobs require oversight of a multi-billion dollar school system serving over $150,000.students, they should be compensated as a full time job. I don't agree that SAHPs inherently think women shouldn't work outside the home, but absolutely think working parents should be represented on it. The notion that working moms are bad moms is extremely persistent and evident on MCPS's decision making. We need people on the BOE who are personally offended by these reactionary attitudes.
Why shouldn’t all kinds of families be represented. You clearly have no respect for anyone different than you. Working parents are well represented currently on the board. Some are double dipping with two jobs.
It’s a safety issue and it’s not ok you are so entitled and refuse to make a back up child care plan. School is not child care. Even a sahp needs a back up plan occasionally. Try being kinder and maybe others will help you out if you return the favor. Or, get the names of the child care workers and offer them a ton of money and an uber to your home to make it work.
Only about 10% of families in Montgomery County have a stay at home parent. So at most there should only be one on the board. Even that results in over representation.
Oh good grief. Should half the BOE members be men because half the parents are men? Do you think elected leaders anywhere get chosen by quota?
When the demographics of elected leaders don't reflect the people they represent, it is important to see why that is and address it.
The issue isn’t the demographics it’s the leadership and old girls network. Majority of those women were working or heavily involved in mcps before the BOE.
The so-called "old girls network" has the same problem. Adverse selection towards SAHPs that weren't able to hold down good jobs. These aren't who we should be striving for on the BoE.
So run for office yourself. Or work to get only WOHPs elected.
If you refuse to do the work yourself, you can’t complain about those who will do it.
It is entirely understandable why only SAHPs and retirees run. It is set up as a short-term, full-time job that pays very little. We need to change the job.
What is with the sahp hate. Most of those on the board had jobs and had to leave them or are working another job. Look at Kayla. She’s the Mc liaison for Mcps and double dipping. She ran mcps into the ground.
Even if you think that, isn't that even more reason to say the job needs to change?
This thread clearly demonstrates that SAHPs don't have the same equities as working parents. And with the county overwhelmingly composed of working parents, that's a problem.
What equities? You can choose to stay home and not work. You choose to work.
And those choices clearly lead to different equities. Maybe you should look the word up before you post again.
