yes! And then you'd throw out your phone number, hoping some cute guys (in our case) would catch the number. Or you'd yell out Wheaton Plaza (when it wasn't a mall) and set a time to meet. Oftentimes, what showed up was disappointing.

You can't make those calls anymore b/c of caller ID . . .

This really does bring back memories. So here's a question - do we actually miss some of these places (other than Farrells which we clearly all seem to want resurrected). I grew up in Bethesda in the 70's when it was a total backwater. I prefer it now - not sure I miss the hot shoppes and the auto body shops that much. And we still have Bruce Variety and Strosniders for nostalgia and convenience.

Some of the things mentioned here are such a teeny, tiny slice of a pattern of socializing--yet many of us were repeating the same loops passing each at different steps or phases of life, having many of the same experiences and having similar reactions positive or negative. Yet DC suffers such an intense identity crisis. It has no unique cuisine, music, sport team, no distinct unifying theme. There is a general disdain for all things distinctly DC outside of DC. Yet, the memories here are being recalled with such fondness.

I wonder why there is no palpable pride about being from DC--rather just a derision of all local processes that are uniquely local?


What? who the ef cares what people outside of DC think. No unique music - go-go doesn't make the cut? No unique sports team - are you serious? I think this thread proves that DC is unique but I don't care if other people understand it or not. I am proud of being from DC - warts and all. Many thanks to everyone for posting their memories - some things I had completely forgotten about, but came rushing back after reading this thread.

Entirely possible. I have a vague memory of a white guy with a beard but that was a loonnnggg time ago and he could have been wearing a turban too.
