The kids at our school who went to ivy did take the most rigorous courses offered at the school. I don’t think they were to impress anyone, they are just naturally smart. Of course they also have high scores.

Everyone around the world knows Stuy and they Bronx Science. A lot of people know TJ. A fair amount of people know NCSSM. No one cares at all about the other ones - might as well be at West Omaha School of Auto Repair.

Because they are large schools and New York City is famous and large and important. Meanwhile the top students in NYC are from rich parents or scholarships kids who go to private or boarding school.

If you look at which schools churn out award winning students, Stuy (and lol at Bronx Science) is down the list.

Stuy and Bronx Science or any of the NYC specialized schools remain test required, that ensures the smart ones get in.

TJ and NCSMM are not test required. Their applicant pool is also much smaller than NYC.

Bronx Science has more nobel prize winners than any other school in the world (nine). This matters a lot more than national science fairs or whatever. Plus a bunch of Pulitzers and other major awards.

And many of the top students at Stuy and Bronx Science are poor immigrant kids. They are both predominantly Asian.

Exactly. That is why I mentioned this. I live in NYC and have friends with kids at allegedly top suburban schools in VA, NC and MD who are obsessed with pushing their kids ahead and think it shows that their kids are so brilliant and their schools are so great. It really doesn't. But they are in their little bubble.

I have also heard that these kids who place into super advanced math sometimes end up struggling if they end up at top colleges because they aren't as prepared as they think they are.

I’ve heard quite a few cases where public school students failed miserably in college calculus class. The AP classes or whatever more advanced math courses offered in these public schools are not well taught. The foundation is just not there.

We did private school summer prep math classes at a local school. Some of the teaching was much worse than in public. It’s hit or miss regardless of the school on teacher quality and fit.

This. Publics do better with math and science, and privates almost always do better with English and social sciences.

And the reason for this is that English and humanities is far more expensive to teach than math and science, since humanities work is more open ended. But it's free to throw a kid in a higher level math class.

NCSMM in North Carolina is also a pretty good magnet school. Comparable to Stuy/Bronx Science. There is one in Jersey but I forgot the name of the school (high tech?).
