First of all, in no way would any Ivy League school have to “lower the quality of the student body.” However, I’m going to guess you’re fine with “lowering the quality of the student body” when it serves the purpose of promoting diversity?

Maybe the government should limit the number of international students at all top schools. Getting in and the cost of attending is just too much.
International students are a major source of funding. They are almost all full pay (sometimes at higher rates than Americans) so they subsidize financial aid as well as their programs of study.
If the government were paying for universities - as it could and arguably should, so that everyone could have a low-cost or free education - then maybe we could talk about it. But as it is, limiting international students would just reduce what the university can afford to do for Americans.
I always love this argument - the rich foreigners are "full pay" - as if full pay is a good thing given the outrageous cost of a college education in the US. This is how you people get around admitting the middle class kids - just admit a few poor students and mix them in with the elitist snobs that can afford "full pay" and you're good!
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Why not ban foreigners from competing in the US Open Tennis grand slam? That way, more US players can qualify and play in the tournament. Is that a good thing? Will you buy tickets to a much, much more mediocre tournament? Will you enjoy the tournament without foreign players?
Now ask the same question about colleges.
Stupid analogy. The US Open Tennis Tournament is not funded with US taxpayer dollars. US colleges are, both in terms of research grant funds and with substantial financial aid programs without which the colleges would be unable to operate. Since US colleges cannot subsist without federal financial support, it is not unreasonable for the federal government to limit the number of foreigners taking advantage of said institutions.

Harvard has always been a bastion of elitism. Once it was class. Briefly it was academic prowess. Now it’s some other combined formula of achievement, money and ambition.
It has never been a pure meritocracy. Those claiming they are owed a spot there might look at the broader picture of haves and have nots in this country. You want yours, but seem to have little concern with what others will never have.
The sense that the greatest power and prestige are just within grasp, keeps people focused on the dream of that little brass ring. Whoosh there goes our democracy. There goes medical research.
Foreign students occupying some seats there hardly matter.

I am for intl students being enrolled, but my kid is at a T20, and I am surprised that probably the 25 I have spoken to are all receiving aid. Zero told me they are full pay. I used to think as you do now.

There are videos on Chinese platforms thanking Trump. They said the best and brightest often left for places like Harvard. Hong Kong University of Science and Tech just offered unconditional acceptance for all Harvard students.
#braindrain.
Thanks, MAGA. /s
Yes, I believe everything that’s on Chinese media platforms. They can be trusted.

Trump is speed running the US's influence into the ground and China is running to pick up the pieces.
Basically, Trump is handing global influence to China.
+1. But maga are populist nativists who want to isolate the US. They do not understand why global influence is important to our national security.

I'm a dem and understand global influence. You are overstating the case and you know it. I'm not a maga and I'm all for things being reconfigured. Stop pretending. American students are having a very hard time getting in to colleges and getting jobs. It's time we look at how importing students and workers is hurting our population. It's like NAFTA all over again.
Stop pretending that this isn't hurting the citizens in this country.
