On the rise of what?

Popularity and as many have said becoming a much
More difficult admit

But absent some recognition or improvement in some real area/s, its increased "popularity" could be solely the result of tougher admissions of the state's top 3 colleges.

1. Who cares?
2. JMU got upgraded to R1 which has nothing to do with other colleges in VA

Business school is beautiful! My DS spoke with the head of the IB Program for a long time and walked away impressed with the program but also with a sense of it being a small program within a big school which he liked.

I agree with pps who said JMU is a happy place. And we were really impressed with the business school when we toured last weekend.

I like the size of JMU too, but I do also have a DC at VT and was amazed at how *not* huge it actually feels. The campus is pretty compact, residential halls on one side and academic buildings on the other. You don't have to take a bus around campus the way you would at a lot of other big schools. My DC absolutely loves it there.

This is interesting. We toured JMU but we have not yet toured VT. Do students need to take a bus to get around campus at VT?

No, that's what I was saying. They can walk to their classes and dorms. Once they live off campus, then yes - many take a bus to their various neighborhoods. But when on campus day-to-day, there's no need to take a bus anywhere.

Apologies, I thought you were talking about JMU.

No worries! JMU was like this too, if I recall. There is East Campus, but there are pedestrian walkways you can take to get there. I can't remember if shuttle buses were needed to get around campus, but I don't believe so.

DP. There are shuttle buses at JMU, but they are not necessarily necessary. It's a good workout, especially if you need to rush from one edge of campus to another. It's the hills! A shuttle may be helpful if you're rushing from west campus to the farthest buildings on east, though it's still a very walkable distance. I haven't been to VT - is it just as hilly, or does it sit in a flat area?

I think once you get used to a campus, nothing is as far away as it first seemed. I remember walking my schedule before the first day of classes at my college and thought I'd never make it from my psych class to English in the 15 minutes between. I tested out of English and ended up not having to find out for sure; but after being there a little while, it was laughable to think how I wouldn't have made it between those two particular buildings in time. Especially my last semester when I literally had to book it from one corner of campus to the diagonally opposite corner in less than 15 minutes.

VT, while surrounded by mountains, has a fairly flat campus so no hills to navigate while walking around.

Total non-issue.

I don't think it is harder. In state stats are a bit higher.

She’s an alumna. Not an alumnus.

Well, the PP didn't go to JMU - so perhaps you could conjure up a little forgiveness for the error?

PP adding: of course, my college campus was FLAT - A hilly trek, I would have taken the shuttle if it got me there in time.

This is often what I hear from current students, and what should be a huge factor for my kid. I hope my DD gets in next year.

Not for money but being in Honors College offers a lot of benefits. JMU does not give out much merit money in general

+1 when we toured JMU and VT with DS, he came away with the impression that JMU was bigger because the campus felt more spread out, especially with the highway running between campus. He ended up at VT and likes the campus layout.
