Actually, the review was not kind to the movie, the director, or the very concept -- only to the performances by the leads.

If you hate the actress for some reason, then don't go, but objectively her performance is fantastic and her singing is terrific. I like Idina Menzel but I have heard plenty of people sing better - and Cynthia Erivo is one of them.

Also strange that you think a stage performance somehow translates poorly to the big screen. Usually it's the other way around. I loathe celebrity casting in musicals usually, when they can't really sing. This is the opposite - casting people who actually could earn these roles on Broadway.


Pulling this comment up ... Erivo is an impeccable singer. I don't love Kristin Chenoweth OR Idina Menzel. They both always sounded to me like they were damaging their vocal chords. Erivo's voice sounds effortless.

Ariana Grande is also very, very good. Her pop stuff isn't my style ... just background music on the radio ... but she is GOOD. I could totally see her on Broadway, and hopefully in many more movies.

LOVED IT.

Ariana Grande is made for the big screen. I understand that she is probably anorexic and can be problematic ... but god damn, she's talented.

Cynthia Erivo is wonderful, but Ariana made the whole thing feel so buoyant and moving. I did not expect to like it as much as I did.

I liked the movie even more than the Broadway show. The whole family enjoyed it including DH (60s), DS (18) and DD (20)...And me (50s).

I enjoyed the “over acting” by G-Linda and the extras. I thought it read as “musical” feel and would be how it would come across on stage. I have not seen the musical but loved the movie.

+1 I kept waiting for this Wow moment, but never got it. I saw the Wicked musical with the original cast and the singing blew me away!!! This? Not so much. A bit disappointed.

I was literally just taking DD and her friends to the theater. Didn't know much about the original or the movie but that last scene made me sit up.

I'm actually going to go see it again so I can pay more attention and I'm someone who has never gone that.


We thought it was amazing. My tween daughter said it was by far the best movie she has seen this year. The soundtrack has been on repeat in the car.

Saw it with two kids (including a tween boy) and both didn't make a peep for the entire 2 hrs 40 minutes. Younger kid complained about leaving it as a cliffhanger (part II), but both thought it was well done (and there were a surprising amount of special effects to make it interesting to a tween boy).

As someone coming to this relatively uninitiated to musical or book, i found it wonderful and accessible for folks that are not musical theater patrons. It was very old Hollywood in the best way and I loved it. Cried my face off at the end.
