I don’t like Cynthia at all. She should stick to stage productions. I’m curious about Arianna in this because she got her start on Broadway.
I will just wait to hear what the non-paid critics say.
The NY Times gave Cynthia a rave review and called her the best thing about the movie.
Paid critic.
Actually, the review was not kind to the movie, the director, or the very concept -- only to the performances by the leads.
If you hate the actress for some reason, then don't go, but objectively her performance is fantastic and her singing is terrific. I like Idina Menzel but I have heard plenty of people sing better - and Cynthia Erivo is one of them.
Also strange that you think a stage performance somehow translates poorly to the big screen. Usually it's the other way around. I loathe celebrity casting in musicals usually, when they can't really sing. This is the opposite - casting people who actually could earn these roles on Broadway.

I loved the movie, but thought the same thing about the extras! Like where did they get all the munchkins in the opening scene, and did no one teach them how to act naturally? Or was the over-acting on purpose? Like the curly redheaded wigs looking so fake-----since they can certainly afford more natural looking wigs, were they purposely like that?

Because a powerful woman of color fights against a dishonest egomaniac?

+1 I kept waiting for this Wow moment, but never got it. I saw the Wicked musical with the original cast and the singing blew me away!!! This? Not so much. A bit disappointed.
Not even the final scene? I don’t know how it compared to the original, but that was an objectively amazing cinematic score.
+1
I was literally just taking DD and her friends to the theater. Didn't know much about the original or the movie but that last scene made me sit up.
I'm actually going to go see it again so I can pay more attention and I'm someone who has never gone that.
