In the 60s it was standard to wash hair once a week to hold a "set." Sometime in the late 60s a shampoo ad came out (might have been Prell) saying it was so gentle you could wash your hair every day. Hairstyles became looser and more casual.

I remember this from reading teen novels and advice stuff in the 1960s (graduated h.s. in 1972 by which time of course it was all long straight parted in the middle hair). If you ask google you will find many sites where the once a week shampoo was standard at the time.

I don't shampoo daily because I wash it in the shower and I shower every other day because of extremely dry skin (all my life) which is prone to eczema and itching (dr. said no daily showers). Aging has made my hair drier as well, although I can feel slight oiliness by the end of the second day.

You can also let your hair get wet without sudsing it up.

Dry shampoo was invented so that people don’t have to wash their hair every day.
That is very drying and damaging to the hair.
If you color your hair you also should not wash your hair every day. Wouldn’t you wash out the color faster?

No we don’t wash our hair daily.
No we aren’t dirty or have foul smelling hair as a result.

How do you know how often these people wash their hair?

fwiw, I am white and only wash my hair every 2 - 3 days. It is fine, curly, and very dry. No way can I wash daily; it would crackle and break off.

I can't from far away, but I can from a few feet away. Maybe some people have more sensitive noses than others. I can also smell the outside on people -- geosmin -- but no one else in my family can.

I can't line dry any clothes outside. It smells afterwards. It's this area. Never had a problem out west.

It depends on how oily your hair gets, the water, and season.

I lived in CA by the coast for decades, and as an adult, washed my hair everyday.

I'm now in my 50s and my skin/hair are drier, especially in the winter. The water here is harsher; more minerals. So, now I wash my hair every other day.

16 yr old DD washes it like every 3 or 4 days, and I can see the oily hair. She definitely needs to wash it more often.

I don't. As I got older my hair got dry. I used to wash it so I could blow it out for work. Now I just air dry at home.

I am talking about a white woman's hair here. I know that different types of hair need different care, but I know that white women in the U.S., in my circles, used to wash hair every day in the 90s and 2000s.

Not having been aware of something doesn’t mean that it’s a “new” or a “trend” once you learn of it… “your circles” are not representative of anything.

No. I promise I can smell your unwashed hair too. Unwashed hair/scalp of any race has a stench. It just does. Though it is variable how long it takes to develop it, but after a week, nearly all people have oils from their scalp giving off a smell.

PP. I say this kindly. This kind of seems like a YOU problem. I'm sorry you find the normal smell of human to be this offensive. It is not reasonable to expect people to shampoo more than is healthy for their own hair in order to reduce a smell that seemingly only you are able to detect. Carry a scented handkerchief around with you if you are this sensitive.

+1. I really think this PP is equating shampoo/hair product scent with a 'clean' hair smell, which is ridiculous.

Agree. What are you expecting to smell when you get a whiff of someone's hair? I use primarily unscented products because I hate the smell of most shampoos, so you would probably think my freshly washed hair smells dirty because you aren't getting a whiff of herbal essences.
