My child has no retake options in mcps hs. Maybe this is class dependent. Or at least I know they did not this year in higher level courses.

There's certainly a fair bit of trolling, but acknowledging the cause of the recent flight to private isn't part of it. For what it's worth, I don't agree with the others posters that are claiming that MCPS has gotten significantly worse.[/quote]

I also disagree that MCPS has gotten significantly worse (academically). It’s been awful for years, but it’s shortcomings were masked by parents who supplemented and remediated (at home or through a booming tutoring industry) and by individual teachers who subversively taught actual content because they knew the kids needed it. While MCPS has always had some amazing opportunities (magnets, FL immersion, etc.), many kids reliant on MCPS preparation would not have been able to take advantage of those opportunities.

When my kids started, Weast was still in charge and they were ahead of Curriculum 2.0, using a previous MCPS curriculum that was even worse. Since then, the MCPS proprietary curriculum has been proven a failure and they’ve been forced to adopt commercial curriculums. Now, parents can access the curriculum and we can analyze the success rates (or lack thereof in other districts) rather than using our kids as guinea pigs. Most importantly, it seems like they’ve finally decided to teach phonics explicitly. This one change is, by itself, a massive leap forward.

As for the discipline problems I’ve been hearing about with classroom evacuations and locked bathrooms, things have gotten a lot worse. Those things were unheard of back then. One of my kids had a truly hellacious experience with bullies (including death threats in the third grade, formation of an “I hate “Larla” club” that targeted anyone who associated with DD, and physical assaults on the playground). Other parents were calling me to say that their kids were traumatized by what they saw going on, but at least my daughter felt safe in the classroom. Kids today are apparently denied even that. How can we expect our kids to learn anything if they don’t feel safe and their instructional time is disrupted by violence and evacuations?
