Some are trolls

Many of us are people who genuinely want to do the right thing, but also find some of the amateur public health advice and moralizing ("I'm a good citizen and you are not!") shared on DCUM to this day pretty dumb and irresponsible.

To be fair, you have to include the context that those comments are usually in reaction to those saying they DGAF and Covid is a lie/over/overblown, you name it. I don't hear "I'm a good citizen and you're not", I hear "don't be an ahole". I think there is a distinction.

I think you'll find the COVID deniers actually love being called murderers for not wearing masks because it truly makes you look unhinged. I recommend reserving that term for people who perpetuate anti vax myths because those people are truly responsible for a lot of death and the data clearly show this. Not so much for anti-maskers, as annoying as those people were at the height of the pandemic.

PP here. I agree with you, and have not called anyone a murderer.

Frankly I think any moralizing about masking is really dumb especially given the benefits are marginal. Unfortunately COVID is out there and you risk catching it when you socialize with others.

This is the correct answer. People shouldn’t have to mask anymore to make others comfortable. If you don’t want covid, wear a mask in public. It’s the only fair way. Asking others to mask is unreasonable at this point.

I just think it's hilarious that people refuse to wear a mask when they are actually sick and contagious, but they think other people should wear masks any time they are in pubic. Wearing a mask when you have symptoms but aren't sick enough where you need to stay home, isn't to make other comfortable - it's to try to avoid transmitting your actual illness to them.

I just had a raging cold that lasted 2+ weeks - not covid. I was never sick enough to stay home or miss work. But my nose was a faucet and I was coughing. Not wearing a mask. Didn’t do it before Covid, not doing it now.

I wonder what two days of rest would have done to your raging cold...when I am coughing and constantly blowing my nose, I stay home.

If you have a kid in daycare it can be weeks on end of various little daycare bugs. It's really hard and toddler masking doesn't help, it's just really gross.

Only jerks don't try to isolate when they have COVID.

I work with elderly people. I'm testing so I don't kill anyone.

The majority of us DON’T work with elderly people. We’re not going to kill anyone anymore than if we don’t isolate with the common cold. Stay in your lane.

However, you live in a world with vulnerable people. I’m one of them.

So wear a mask and avoid large gatherings.

I do. We’re all free to hurt each other, right? You’re free, I’m free and come November that could all change.

A friend just got it and said she just felt like she had a cold so symptoms probably vary. She tested only because she was visiting her sick mother in the hospital and didn't want to get her sick.

You need to stay in your lane. If you don't work with elderly people or have a loved one who is immuno-compromised, etc., then WHY are you even on this thread commenting. NO one on this thread has said anything about everyone testing. But some of us do, because we are protecting people we care about. And the truth is, you should isolate for a short period of time when you are symptomatic at the start of any virus. ANY virus. People who go around when they are actively sick are, in fact, jerks. ALWAYS have been, long before covid.

The people who continue to come on Covid-related threads to say "who cares" or "stay in your lane" need therapy. Or some compassion. or maybe just to STFU.

Sorry, you didn’t say this?

“Only jerks don't try to isolate when they have COVID.”

You sound completely unhinged.

I did not say that. That was a different PP. People with *any* illness should stay home when they are actively sick to minimize spread of infection. That's basic. That is what I meant by "isolate for a short period".

I think whether or not the person who did say that is over stepping depends on what they mean by isolate. Does that really mean stay home when you are first sick or stay home for 10 days. The former is common sense and common courtesy. The latter is no longer necessary.

Either way, the only people who sound unhinged are people like you and other PPs who come on threads like this and stir up trouble because you were so traumatized by Covid, you can't remain civil when the word is mentioned.

The OP said nothing about everyone testing and nothing about everyone isolating. There is a subset of people who still, quite legitimately, pay attention to covid. If you have no reason to do so, count your blessings and leave those of us that do alone. Seriously, go away to other threads where you might possibly have a relevant comment.

Then why did you belligerently respond to my post responding to a specific post that wasn’t yours? Are you so incompetent that you are unable to follow a written conversation?

Again, you are unhinged. And not very bright.

Talk about projection. Write clearly, respond to the post you intend to. And stop using words you don't understand.

Moron.

Your follow-up is non-sensical. I suggest you re-read the quoted sub-thread. Maybe all the mask wearing has depleted your oxygen supply to the point at which a critical mass of brain cells have been destroyed.

I disagree. If you know you are contagious, you should mask.

Yes, but you don't get to decide when someone else is contagious. Current public health guidance is while sick and for 5 days after feeling better. You can test for COVID but it doesn't tell you much and repeated testing is not practical for many people (just to confirm COVID a family of 3 needs 6 testd since you are supposed test twice, nevermind if you are trying to "test out" of masking).

Somehow I think you can afford a few covid tests.

It's not about what I can afford. Let's say I get COVID. At some point, my 6 year old will get it and so will DH. So we're each testing repeatedly. Let's say 6 times each - 2-3 times while we wait to test positive and then at least 3-4 times while we wait for the line to disappear. That's 18 tests at a minimum. That'll run me a little over $100 on Amazon. Okay fine. Then what do I get out of it? A test that hasn't been tested or designed to measure contagiousness. Do I keep my child home for 10+ days, I lose time at work, she misses school while feeling completely fine, while her line finally disappears? No, and her school would not be cool with that either. And if it's negative, I still probably have something else that's not good to transmit to other people. $100 is not that much for many of us, but it's too much to spend on something that provides very little if any actionable information.

DP. It's hard to figure out who is responding to who. The public health guidance is to stay home while sick and return to activities when feeling better and fever free with a mask. If you do that, you are amazing. In a perfect world, you might want to avoid indoor activities with people while you in the initial stages of active sickness or tell them you are sick and give them the choice whether to see you. I don't think you should have to test negative before resuming activities if you are feeling better, but some of us have to be extra careful due to life circumstances, so we do. I'm caring for elderly parents in poor health in addition to doing my job. I have to be more cautious than others, but there is no way to avoid illness entirely. I don't expect the world to sacrifice their lives to protect vulnerable people like my parents to spend hundreds on tests - that's not reasonable. I also don't think it's reasonable to expect that kids will miss weeks of school for every illness. Some things are more important that minimizing the risk of disease, including children's education. However, I appreciate anyone who makes an effort to avoid spreading their active illness, whether by staying home or masking as recommended by the CDC guidance, or by testing when you think you have allergies but aren't sure or have a known exposure (especially if you are going to be around vulnerable people). Masks and rapid tests aren't going to prevent all transmission, but they help.

+1
This is the thing, runny noses and coughs last a while. It sucks to wear a mask in this situation and after a few days you aren't contagious anyway.

I think the CDC guidelines are fine, except some people cannot wear masks properly which raises concerns due to the lack of accurate information about how likely it is to actually transmit covid after you are feeling better.

WTF is wrong with you?
