2D- Kidnapping / Stolen Auto
The Second District is investigating a Kidnapping and Stolen Auto that occurred on Friday, January 5, 2024, at approximately 1803 hours in the Unit block of 3000 M Street NW.
The complainant was traveling with her four-month-old daughter when a tire deflated on her rental vehicle, a white Jeep. She pulled over in the 3000 block of M St NW and exited the vehicle to ask for help. While outside the Jeep, which she left running, an unknown suspect entered the vehicle and drove away with her four-month-old daughter westbound on M St NW.
At approximately 1853 hours, MPD officers received a call that an unknown individual left the child, still in her car seat, in the 1500 block of 28th St SE with a note stating that the baby had been lost from Georgetown. After knocking on the door, the suspect fled. No lookout is available. The homeowners then took the child to the Sixth District Police substation. There is no available lookout for the complainant's vehicle at this time except that it was a white jeep of an unknown make and model.

It's a rollercoaster of a story. They did do the right thing. Still feel horrified by the mom. some witnesses commented that she took her time smelling all the candles at La Labo, ran out clutching one when she saw her car was gone, and then came back in to talk to the Police there.
What witnesses? Do you have a link (l googled but didn’t find). Her behavior sounds too crazy to be true.
NP here. I read that in the comments of the Washingtonian problems insta page. I think it is in this particular post. https://www.instagram.com/p/C1vV3uBRXM6/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
The mother lied to the police, witnesses on social media reported that the mother was shopping and stopping to smell scents and test out items to purchase. The mother is the main source of culpability.

And then sure as sh*t they need to be sentenced and I want to hear what education and life skills they will be offered, and what consequences they will face if they don't take advantage of their 2nd chance. We must change the law on these heinous crimes, the anonymity and clean records of youth in this city, and the revolving door.

“It is unfortunate that a 4-month[-old] child was in the back seat, regardless of how it (the carjacking) was done,” Robinson said.
“The main thing is that the 4-month-old child was reunited with her mom. And as we immediately alerted our surrounding jurisdiction, saturated the area and took precautionary measures and everything that we could possibly do to locate this child. And we’re glad to know that the young lady is back with her mom,” he added.
Police are continuing to search for the stolen car and the suspects. They say the Jeep has a missing gas cap door.

Leave your car running with your kid in it???
Anonymous wrote:She wasn’t buying candles, you judgemental people. She was asking for help because her rental car had a maintenance issue.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:If the tire on her rental car was so deflated she had to stop and ask for help without attending to her baby, how did the rental car get so far away with the thieves?
I’m the person who posted the police report. Now that is a good question.🤔

I am very pro-prosecution but would be very lenient on this case. They did the right thing where it mattered.

Congress should do whatw? You will act how? Seriously what do you think will prevent this crime?
If citizens start shooting back?
1) no weapon used in this crime
2) such crimes often involve SEVERAL armed perps, even if you were LE you are not going to outgun that sitch.
3) shoot as a crime victim and I would NOT expect that to go well for you legally in this city
4) is it really harder to move than to pretend you will play Rambo and in all likelihood lose everything, if not killed yourself, in reality? What if your teens want to go to a movie in Georgetown? Skating? Shopping?
5) there have been murders, robberies and carjackings often in broad daylight in the Georgetown strip for a while now, even during rush hour. 1 man was murdered outside georgetown cupcake around the same time in the evening. maybe people had not noticed change until this had so much publicity?
The homeowner who shot the carjacker in the alley was charged.
Months later, the off duty security guard who shot the carjacker was not.
The city is getting tired of the carjacking and crime. If things don't change on the LEO and prosecution side, things will start changing on the victim side.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Crime is out of hand in the city no doubt, but it was very irresponsible of the mother to leave the child in the car like that.
Yes, it was.
But still, there were predators out looking for victims at 6 on a Friday. We were very close to a violent crime on The Wharf and since have been spending more time in Georgetown for dinner, a movie, shopping, it seemed safer. My illusions about that are gone.
In the 90s, DC was so cheap. The feeling of needing to be vigilant and the financial stress put together are exhausting. In 90s crime was more predictable, witnesses, daylight, cops nearby all deterred. Now, have to be on high alert coming out of Wegmans in City Ridge on a Sunday afternoon, on the metro at peak fare times, etc. Another bad law was the service fee, costs of eating out have gone up so much. Thanks DSA for promoting that as a win. Instead restaurants are closing and people are losing their jobs, entirely predictable. I feel like we've been dropped in an episode of Portlandia with elements of Skid Row. Wish we could go back to 2017 or 2012. QoL was SO much better.
