Not disparaging what other people like, but this is specifically why I just was not into dating much taller men. I'm 5'4", so not tiny but also not tall. I dated a few athletes in college and after and the feeling of turning to my date and just seeing torso was so weird. Slightly better when sitting down but you still had to tilt your head back to make eye contact. It's so uncomfortable.

My DH is 5'10" and I feel like we are the same general level when we interact, which I honestly think improves communication and might even promote empathy and other things that are valuable in a marriage. There was just something about being someone who was a full head or more taller than me that just didn't feel comfortable to me.

I'm sure those couple with the big height gaps just have different preferences than me, I guess the stuff that bugged me about it doesn't bother them. But I've never once wished my DH was any taller, and I don't think he wishes I was any shorter.


I’m 5’5” and all my boyfriends and now husband were 5’10”-5’11” and very fit, muscular athletic. Soccer player type body. I agree that it’s perfect fit for talking almost eye level-dancing, etc.

The men in my family are all over 6 feet and my 18-year old is 6 feet now and will likely grow another inch or so like my brothers. My younger son at 16 is just starting his growth spurt, but he’s 5’8” right now taller than his brother was then.

This can have unintended consequences, such as having "too tall" sons and daughters.

Being really tall can have downsides, especially for women.

I am 5'2", and my DH is 6'2". Our daughters (teenagers) are 5'7", which if great. But our son (age 20) is 6'6". Being this tall creates a lot of hassles, which as hitting your head, finding clothing and shoes in a store (as opposed to having to buy everything online). If he marries a tall girl, I am worried that their children will be too tall. My son has a female friend who is 6'6", and it is not fun to be that tall.

(My son once mentioned to me that, at college, when people meet him, they always first comment on his height and ask what sports he plays. He did play a sport in high school, but does not play it in college. People often comment that "your height is wasted on you."

So I have some very tall nieces, and I wish so much that they would marry shorter men, but they seem insistent on finding a boyfriend who is taller than they are. But that just perpetuates the cycle of having taller and taller children.

I’m a reasonably tall guy (6’2”) who is definitely attracted to shorter women. My wife is 5’8” (not short) but the shortest I dated was 5’3”. She definitely had no problem wrapping her legs around me. I like sort women. There’s just something about them.

One question this raises for me is how much height of a potential mate impact instinctual attraction (you see someone and think "yes I want this person") versus attraction ideals (the list people have in their heads of generally what they are looking for physically in a mate). Speaking as a woman, I like the idea of a tall guy, like over 6'. But when I was dating, I didn't like how I felt with men that tall. I didn't actually enjoy like having to crane my neck back to look at them when we were close together, and I didn't like feeling so much smaller than the person I was with. I wound up marrying a guy who is 5'10", and while obviously his height was not the primary driver, I don't think I'd actually want to be with someone longterm who was any taller.

What this means for men, I don't actually know. Maybe they like the idea of really short women but then, like me, they discover the reality of a big height difference is kind of annoying. Or maybe the opposite is true, maybe they go into dating thinking they want a model type -- tall, thin, long lines. But then they discover they prefer how they feel around shorter women more.


That’s me. I get hit on all the time. It’s a sweet spot. With running shoes I’m around 5’6”-5’7”, give me a 3-inch heel and I’m 5’8”.

Many think I’m taller than I am. I think it’s because I’m proportional, fit.
