Naviance may be viewed a little more favorably because its on the local school level. Both have their advocates, but largely dismissed by the majority.

It used to be UMCP, I think it offiicially became UMD about 20 + years ago. Something about getting the designation of the state's flagship school.

As someone who has been to many many campuses, are there nicer ones? Sure. Are there worse ones? Yes many, many worse. But if that is your priority, knock yourself out and head to Tuscaloosa (beautiful) or Boulder (which ain't all that tbh, and it sure as hsit ain't in Denver). If you think Austin in nicer, ok, maybe, you do know its *downtown* Austin right? And also, you ain't getting in OOS. And certainly not to a good major unless you're the TJ or Blair Valedictorian. (Yeah, I know Susie and Millie, and Johnny all got in) Sure they did.

My kid would hate the weather in Austin, no matter how "nice" the campus is.


Mine would hate the politics of TX. I'll take an alleged crappy campus over bigotry, suppression of reproductive rights, and guns any day.

Not sure what you mean. Naviance is a garbage in, garbage out system. Not something you want to rely on but one that gives you "better than nothing" usefulness.

Upon further review, Ann Arbor is not part of the MSA of Detroit. It is part of the CSA. The original posting was correct.

Boulder is beautiful but I wouldn't say Denver is major city. Same goes for Ann Arbor and Detroit today.

UW's campus is beautiful and it is picturesque because of the nature surrounding it (particularly Mt. Rainier). The town surrounding campus is nothing to write home about. Frankly it's non-existent.


Detroit still has 4.3 million people in its metropolitan area. 14th largest in the USA. It’s still a major city. Ann Arbor is not in the Detroit MSA by the way.

It is almost impossible to transfer into CS or Engineering at UMD unless one is directly admitted into the program. It will be even harder to do so in 2024. On average, I don't think a CMU grad makes more than an UMD grad. Exceptions do not count as the norm.
