You guys don’t get it. We seriously would never want to have a life like this. It is not jealousy we feel, it’s pity for people who live this way!


That’s such a Washington response. I feel sorry for people who are so uncomfortable in their own skin that they have to be constantly distracting themselves with work and other “productive” activities. Keeping yourself busy is not an accomplishment — it’s usually a sign that you can’t face solitude or quiet. I had an extremely busy, stressful, successful career, which I enjoyed, and now I am very happy living a life where I can shape my own days (or do nothing at all) and very little is demanded of me while I am still young enough to enjoy it. I don’t need the job to feel complete. I do know people in my profession who will never retire because they truly wouldn’t know what to do with themselves, and I think that’s just who they are, but also very sad.

I have to learn to appreciate doing nothing. I'm not sure I'll ever get there. I don't think my current beliefs and actions are helping me be a good person or happy. So thank you nothing-ers! Lead the way!

You’re joking I hope? Your brother’s MIL and MILLIONS of other women did the exact same. Are you completely unaware of how things were pre 1970? This was the norm for women her age and for women younger as well. I am sure she did many many things in her day-to-day life that you’re not privy to.


She has only two kids. My mom had four kids, a widow, forced back to work full time.

My mom would be hosting thanksgiving, Xmas while raising four kids running a house while working full time. My mom used to say I have no clue what that lady does all day. I still don’t, she is still married but they moved to a condo for “less work” 25 years ago. She goes to supermarket once a week. Her husband in retirement was on condo board for a bit, did projects, goes to church on Sunday. But she did not join him as “too busy”. So lazy is she that they bought a place walking distance to Catholic Church and now that he is pushing 90 he can walk if she has car. Never had a pet or a plant. I visited then by chance once as in that area and was not even offered a drink of water. Literally last has spent her life doing nothing

She and her mom hate this woman and talk trash about her to make themselves feel better. She breathes and they roll their eyes, mumbling about her lack of effort.


They are sh!t-talking an octogenarian who probably doesn’t even think of them once every 2 years. It would take a lot to be a bigger pile of crap than this woman and the bitter ugly woman who birthed her.

I know people like this. Both of them have severe mental issues like agoraphobia and anxiety. One of them will never work, the other just flat out refuses to work. I know people judge them for their lack of contribution, and might even envy them for lack or responsibilities, but I think it is so depressing that I can even begin to imagine how awful it is to live like that.

I find that to be depressing.

Work or don't work, volunteer or don't volunteer - I don't care.

But to be so sanguine about the passage of time (to the point of not knowing what day it is) saddens me.

My feelings on your statement but not a judgement (and yes I know that is the thing everyone says about judgey statements.)
