Not really, no. Only times I really see checkers being faster are at Aldi where they literally throw the groceries as they scan.

+1
I find myself cursing out these machines, yet I still continue using them. It's (usually) so much faster than a cashier. But for the love of God, I wish they would figure out how to stop this incredibly annoying pattern.

Also if you have more than 20 items and are going thru self check (minus the scanner people) you are a jerk. It takes way longer than using the manned lane especially when you don't know what you are doing.
The new 20-item limit is fine for the small self-checkouts but my Giant also has two regular-sized checkouts (with conveyor belts, the kind where checkers used to work) set up as self-checkouts. That does not have the 20-item limit yet. If they try to impose it there, they will get reamed by customers. A lot of people use those two measly full-sized self-checkouts for larger amounts of shopping because most of the time, day or night, there are only ONE to two actual checkers working, and most often it's just one.
Yup. And it drives me crazy when people with 1 or 2 items in their hands use those lanes instead of the express lanes.
You are ridiculous!

It's done due to crime. You think Giant really wants to make the self-checkout experience more annoying for customers? They have to, because of theft and no prosecution by the district attorneys.
Do you think the police are showing up and arresting people for stealing from the grocery store? Because if you do, then I have an excellent investment opportunity for you.![]()
I’ve heard them on my local police scanner regularly hitting the Walmart to pick up shoplifters. You’d be wrong to assume they are ignoring it.

This. I refuse to use self checkout unless I have 5 items or less. At all the grocery stores I use the wait is usually not that long but I try not to shop during prime time.
If everyone refused to use the self checkers that might make a difference. I don’t want to support people losing their jobs.
This has been covered. It’s nonsense.
