You cannot even make a comparison between drinking in Europe vs. the US . I grew up in a Mediterranean country and the whole attitude towards alcohol is completely different than here . In my home country , people mostly enjoy 1-2 drinks of alcohol at a social gathering to relax and loosen up a bit . Most of the time , alcohol is consumed with food and enjoyed during long meals with family and friends. I had my first glass of wine with my parents at a family gathering when I was 15. Because alcohol was never forbidden , we never sought to drink in secret or binge drink. We partied a lot in college and I had the best time of my life but I never saw anyone get drunk or pass out.

In the US , it seems to me that kids drink just to get drunk and pass out. I was shocked when I came here and saw how much drinking there is at fraternity parties. I’m not saying there is no binge drinking going on in Europe but it’s not nearly to the extent it is here, at least from my experience.

Comparing drinking habits of teens in the US to those abroad is like comparing apples to oranges.

I can’t believe people aren’t talking more about the liability! I don’t think it’s okay for other parents to make this decision for my child. I assume my kid will drink in high school and I hope she’ll exercise good judgement, I think it’s many levels of crazy to allow it to happen in your own home though…. My 9th grader was just at her first party with alcohol (parents upstairs, clueless? Pretending not to know?). I’m not calling the cops on them, but I’m definitely judging them to be crappy parents.

I’m French, I love here and while my French side thinks it’s crazy, the bottom line is it’s illegal to serve alcohol to teens here. I wouldn’t want a lawsuit. Another major difference is that French 16 year olds don’t drive…but bottom line is it’s illegal HERE.

DP. I think people happily justify giving alcohol to minors and the letting them drive by pointing to all the people who drive two miles over the speed limit.

What even is your point? I am serious that I can't even tell. Do you think people should be dragged to jail for driving 1mph over 25? Or do you think that if a parent drives 28mph in a 25mph zone, then that parent has no right to criticize other parents who give booze and pot to teens?

Most people can distinguish the severity between different infractions. A jaywalker and an arsonist aren’t in the same ballpark.
