The international (meaning, foreign National) students attending US boarding schools generally come from extremely wealthy families. A kid attending a state school in Slough, England isn’t dominating elite US university admissions.
How do you explain the fact that a Nigerian American (from Illinois) is attending Princeton in the fall? Princeton is probably the most elite college destination among Prep students this year.
The other Princeton commit is a white male from Maryland. So I’m not convinced that wealthy foreign students are dominating elite college admissions this year.
One needs to be incredibly smart to be a top athlete. As well as self disciplined and hardworking.
The Nigerian American from Illinois is committed to Princeton to play football.
The white male from Potomac is committed to Princeton to play lacrosse.

Smart and athletic—that explains it.
Let’s be honest, Prep has many athletic recruits who would never be admitted to Princeton. Princeton also requires top grades. Alabama, Auburn, etc just require you to be able to throw and catch the ball.
Right, but know that if you have a kid who is just smart with no athletic talent, he will lose a spot to an athlete. There don't seem to be any spots for local boys with no hooks...and I am not even talking about ivies. Just top 20.
This is the way life goes. Top athletes work very hard to achieve that status. Try some different sports, you may find a sport your son thrives in.
Interesting that these Prep boosters response is "try some sports." That's not how it works.
FWIW, my kid is long graduated from HS. He went to Gonzaga, which is also a very athletic school. The only difference, he did theater (not well either) and other more nerdy activities. He and many of his other nerdy smart friends got into excellent top 20 schools without being recruited to do a sport. Why is it at Prep the only way to get into a top 20 is to be extremely connected or have a talent in a particular sport? Seems very very wrong and I feel bad for the smart nerdy kids who thought this was their ticket to get into an ivy.

Anonymous wrote:Seems there are a lot of bitter folks who are mad their kids didn’t get in. The school had record applications this year. It takes a lot to
shock me but people who are identifying kids specifically through college choices are really sad individuals. News flash many kids make choices based on major and school feel and also financial aid and merit aid. There are at the typical Ivy acceptances but it is not for all and that is fine. Most important is these kids have loved their school experience. Happy kids who will go on to live happy lives.

Not surprised. Prep is by far the best school in the area perhaps even the country. And it’s been around since literally the 1700s.
I don't know. I used to feel this way until I started really looking closely at these college admits. The only admits to top schools are either athletic recruits or boarders. This is really disappointing and I am seriously considering crossing this school off our list. I don't want to put my son in a situation where he is competing against rich foreign nationals and talented athletes for a spot in a top university.

The kid is more talented because he’s good at both. Your kid has to get good at sports

Yeah, i'm going to go out on a limb and say that at least some of those Ole Miss are recruits. Recruits pick Ole Miss over Ivys all the time. Seems like wins all around.
