I understand Virgina United is coached by the Bishop O'Connell coach. They have only one tryout, no make ups. My concern is that the Bishop O'Connell girls who played volleyball under this coach will get an offer and my daughter would be wasting her time trying out.

My daughter has a year already of club volleyball, and was cut from her own team yesterday. The sheer number of girls trying out yesterday at all tryouts was exponentially more than last year. I was stunned. My daughter says it's because many girls who played high school volleyball for the first time now want to play club which wasn't the case last year. My daughter is devastated not to have even been called back to her former club, even though she was invited to invitation only clinics (she attended) and went to the teams other clinics. She was not the only one from her former team to get shut out.

Hence now today we are trying for other clubs, which is why Braddock Road vs Virginia United decision is important. Does anyone know if the BO girls who play for the school are basically a lock to make Virginia United? HELP! Thank you in advance.

Which teams have already picked their 15U rosters anyone know?

This year is unique in that I've heard even the big dogs (Metro and Paramount) followed by the smaller dogs (VAJrs, VAE, etc.) do not have their U15 rosters done yet. This probably also means that nobody else's rosters farther down the pecking order are done either.

I doubt the Tier 3 and 4 level club’s rosters will be dependent on the big dog’s rosters.

Why not? Isn't it the cascade effect, and as players that thought they had an in to Tier 1 & Tier 2 clubs find out they're without a club, they start looking at lower tier clubs, along with all the players who didn't receive any offers at all yet?

I think you are correct. If a coach knows how the girls already play then they are most likely to pick them in my opinion. I would do BRYC and try for both the National and the regional team and see what happens. There are so many girls trying out for U15, 49 to 80 at each tryout.

I’d bet Club 1 is St James and Club 2 is ECP. My daughter was at both (and Vienna Elite immediately afterwards). Really long day.

MVSA is a more established organization and has been around for several decades. With the larger number of teams and its history, MVSA certainly attracts greater interest and a larger number of girls who try out. MVSA teams, especially their 1's teams, are generally more competitive, when compared to MEVC and MOCO. At the same time, it seems MEVC and MOCO appear to be more willing to take newer players and girls who are less experienced. I cannot speak for MOCO but the spirit of MEVC, from my point of view, is to nurture the development of players and the joy of the sport. It does not mean the players I've seen are not willing to be competitive but I think the more competitive players are attracted to other clubs. I suppose it is a matter of where your child is in skillset as well as mindset that determines what club may be the ideal fit.

All are good clubs, but they are different in a lot of respects. There are generally more competitive players at MVSA and MOCO--their 1s teams are much closer to each other than they are to MEVC--and both clubs tend to have players that can compete for spots on the most competitive travel teams in the area. MVSA tends to get a good set off players early and keep them until U15 or so, so there are very few spots open to new players. They do run a rec league, but few players above U12 get onto teams.

MEVC is new, and generally has a development approach, although their teams are improving as they have more players come through the program. They do a good job of developing players, but sometimes struggle to hold on to them as they progress because their top teams generally don't compete at the higher levels of club. MOCO has been around a bit longer, and has more players coming through their development programs like clinics, summer and fall programs. They also put more of those players onto their lower teams. Their top teams shifted to the upper levels of competition over the past few years.

Since MVSA has been around so long, they started when there were few other clubs in the area. They historically had a large pool of players to pull from. As other clubs started--MOCO, then MEVC, then several others--the pool has shifted a lot, especially at the younger ages. Remember that it takes 8 years to take a group of players from U11-U18, so competitiveness is hard to measure until the clubs have had a chance to get established and develop players, and neither MOCO or MEVC have been around that long.

Regarding rankings, AES has a lot of issues, especially when comparing 1s travel teams to 2s regional teams. 1s travel teams from MVSA and MOCO are competing in harder tournaments where staying above .500 generally says your team is decent. That same team competing in a local regional tournament would likely win all their matches, or close to it, and could probably do so against older competition. You would need to look at MVSA, MOCO and MEVC head-to-head records to get a real comparison. I would say MVSA 1s->MOCO 1s>MVSA 2s>MOCO 2s>MEVC 1s, but each age group and team could be different.

This was super super helpful, thank you very much!

~70 tryout participants
8 offers for top team, with 12 callbacks for Sunday
12 offers for second team, with 19 callbacks for Sunday

U15 Club 2
~70 tryout participants (staff made it seem as if they would have about 100 participants for this age group, but I only saw about 70 once the tryout started)
No outcomes to share at this time of this post

I saw two or three of the same parents at both tryouts (having also seen them at pre-tryout clinics at both clubs). I think I overheard some of the players at the end of Club 2 tryout mention that they were headed directly to another tryout.

Who is Club 1 and who is Club 2? Any guesses?

No guesses, but if a club says the have 100+ coming and there are only 70 in the gym, then they are probably running multiple tryout sessions. You don't want your DD to be in a 100+ player tryout -- we've done it before and it was terrible, and even though she got an offer she said she wouldn't do that again.

And yes, especially at U15-U17, players are going to multiple tryouts a day and as many four or 5 in a weekend. U15 is really tough -- you have all the existing club players plus all the new HS players competing for a limited number of spots.

Is Hong a coach? And if Hong is a bad coach, does that make a club a "scam"? Scam implies you're cheating people, whereas a bad coach makes it a bad club but not necessarily a "scam". The original question just didn't make much sense without a whole lot more context.

I wonder if the question is in reference to "VolleyballMD" (http://volleyballmd.com/). They have volleyball clinics out of "Hong Tennis Training Center" near the crossroads of Woodfield Rd. and Airpark Dr. in Gaithersburg, MD. A few years back, I signed my child, a beginner then, after contacting one of the coaches, Shang Hsiung. As it was still early on in COVID, there were very few children so my child got quite a lot of personal coaching among the coaches who were there and benefited from that. I only used the clinic that one time. From what my child received, I would say it was a positive experience.

Other than that, I cannot comment much more on the quality of their teams.

If Dave Geiser is still the 12s coach with MVSA, he’s great at development. One of the best coaches in the area.
