If you get your inheritance now and the rest of the money is spent on healthcare for your MIL then you will get more then everyone else. Also, since you are getting it 20 years earlier you are actually getting more then them even if you all get $1M because $1M in 2022 will be worth considerably more then in 2042. If you get it now so should all of the other heirs.

The monies that the mother in law has are what she and her husband earned in their lifetime.

Since she is a healthy 80 year old she could well make it into her 100's. We have a lot of folks over 100 years old in the senior living community in my town.

She may need outside caregivers at some point in her life. I'm sure her deceased husband worked hard his entire life to make sure that his wife would get excellent care. Caregivers are currently running $31 per hour in Maryland.

The monies are her monies earned by your mother in law and her husband.

Consider taking on a second job driving for uber if you and your husband want to upgrade your house.

The problem with American society is that everyone only thinks for themselves. In Eastern cultures they think about future generations. In US the attitude is “I don’t care what happens after I die, I’ll just use it all up now - money, natural resources, etc.”. It’s a mentality.
