You definitely don’t need a half acre for chickens.


In Fairfax you need 2 acres for any kind of livestock including chickens, unless you get a costly permit.

A half acre is kind of a random requirement, IMO, and an unusual size for a lot. I live on a little over a quarter acre and my neighbors have a third acre. It's a lot of upkeep. I'd only move if it was to upgrade to 2 acres AND I had money for gardening help.


My parents live on over an acre in Alexandria (Fairfax side). They bought many moons ago though and will probably stay forever.


And when they eventually sell, it'll be for a hell of a lot more that $720k.


I mean they bought in the $300k range and it's an older house. But you're right.

That’s one thing I never understand about people who want a ton of land. They will hate maintaining it after the first year. You have to mow the grass weekly, keep up with all of the leaves, etc.

People who want big yards use them maybe 5 times a year unless you have smaller kids. The weather in this area doesn’t compute. It’s either way too hot or too cold. So be careful with this ask.

My guess is Westchester county NY. I'm from right near there (Fairfield County CT) which is just as rich, but I grew up living a solidly middle class life in Stamford with a single parent who sent me to 3 grocery stores every week with coupons for each one (and had to go in multiple times to get the "buy one" discount multiple times).

To the person who posted this, yes, 500k a year is still freaking rich, even when your neighbors make millions. It is sad that you are so privileged and sheltered to not even realize this.

You mention for your salary but also that you're unwilling to use your salary to pay for the house. If you want to spend no more then 720 for a 1/2 acre it doesn't matter if your salary is 5 million

I paid $690K for a third of an acre close in (already very unusual) 20 years ago but my house is 100 years old. If it was a new build and on half an acre it would have been way more if such a thing existed.
