I voted for Fenty but then he brought in Michelle Rhee as schools chancellor and she was an inept manager who tried to hire and fire her way to excellence. It didn't work. I soured on Fenty after that. It's not enough to say a city should have good schools. I wonder if we’re going to be Detroit in 10 years. Our downtown is being gutted by telework. We lost 20k people last year. And our city council is Uber liberal and doesn’t want to fight crime.

At least the last decade of progress has already been erased; the city council is now working on erasing 2000-2010 progress. They won't rest until Marion Barry's ghost gets reelected!

Before him, we were aiming for a city that could maintain a thriving middle class of complete families. Williams and Fenty promoted the idea that cities should have good schools and that "world class" shouldn't be a lie or a joke. Under Vince Gray, we had his staff's admission (maybe from Linda Cropp?) that they were no longer interested in keeping educated families in the city and they would never recognize us as constituents toward whom they held any obligations. If we left, fine. We would always be replaced by an ever-refreshed pool of childless young adults who pay taxes but do not compete with their "real" constituents for city services.

When I was young and childless I don't think I paid attention to any of this but there was definitely a big shift. This recounting of history explains a lot.
Was realistic about Barry but he was getting kids internships at accounting firms, he did not treat them and their futures as disposable. It is mostly poor black and brown people who are the victims of crime, why is that never the focus?
Because victims have no political value for progressives - they demand accountability and tough on crime measures. Criminals you can claim are acting out due to society then feel good about releasing them. If more affluent people become victimized you will see a sharp change in the direction of DC.
I disagree about the affluent people part. You know the response will be, "look how privileged these people are, who cares if they get carjacked at gunpoint?"
Then, when those same affluent people leave, they will complain about that too...
DC seems to view its upper quarter of earners as cash cows to be milked, but who shouldn't dare expect anything in return.

Its not hard to support the conclusions that Charles Allen is bad. What fascinates me even more is the lengths people go to for absolving Bowser of accountability.

The baby had 19 stitches on her little face from near her eye to close to her mouth.
Thankfully, the outspoken ANC commissioner and media attention resulted in the assailant being held over until his next hearing on 1/7. There will probably be updates around that time. I can't even imagine how an 11 month old processes that kind of pain and trauma, not to mention the toddler sib who was not hit with a brick. Head and face wounds also bleed profusely, the toddler must have been terrified.
The brick thrower has no priors per the DC SC website, wonder if he is new to the city? Seems an unlikely first offense, has anyone seen news coverage of his history?

PP again. I have to point out that DC is a place with more than one kind of taxation without representation. It is chilling to me that our elected officials can treat any group of citizens as not "their people".

No. Bowser lived here during the bad times. So did Mendo, and Cheh, and Bonds. Charles Allen and the rest of the Council either didn't live here when things were truly dismal or were too young to remember it well. This is why things are backsliding. Charles Allen, who arrived here in 2003 when the city was starting its upswing, has never seen how bad DC can get.
He's about to, and he and his fellow interloper Brianne are big reasons why.
