Their producers are now just thinking in terms of cliffhangers, plot twists, and adversity for serialization like their TV producer counterparts who sell adventure fiction. They think they need a horse race in order to sell their stories. They can't just have happy news, everything needs to be fraught with uncertainty, there can't be any clear wins, in the misguided notion that this is what they need to get people to keep coming back to them to see what happens next.
This is the mechanism, but it’s not the reason. The reason is that the media is now owned by corporations, and those corporations want to make money and to keep a powerless lower class. That’s it. That’s why they want the GOP in power and cover stories accordingly.
