He did it because he felt so strongly that Daniel's story should not be told befor the leection that he risked losing his home to stop her from telling her story. He felt much more strongly about this than the many running for President who purportedly had over $500M in the bank.

Plus, if Trump’s defense is that Cohen alone committed a crime by paying Daniels, that is an admission that Trump’s reimbursement to Cohen was not payment for legal services but was business fraud and campaign finance fraud by Trump to cover up Cohen’s crime. If Cohen is guilty, Trump is guilty.

Neither is Trump but they both have some skills. Cohen keeps meticulous records.
