Just imagine it’s 6pm on a Wednesday. You’re fighting rush hour traffic to drive from your Big Law office in DC to get over to Alexandria. You then have to fight the airport traffic to get into one of the garages adjacent to the Metro station (which are often sold out to capacity during the week and holiday weekends). You then huff it up the escalator to grab your train to ride one stop to Potomac Yards.

Is Ted Leonis high on drugs? Does he have dementia?

Do any stations on the Yellow/Blue lines have large public parking garages?

The Silver/Orange metro stations at Herndon, Reston, Vienna, West Falls Church, and East Falls Church have plenty of public parking, which is free on weekends and $5 at other times, but switching from Silver/Orange to Yellow/Blue is not very convenient.

I could see across the river at National harbor but in the middle of low density residential with lots of narrow streets? Heck run a ferry over to national harbor from there to increase restaurant traffic but don’t dump 5000 cars on route 1 at once that’s crazy. I’d be less shocked if they were proposing a monorail frankly.

it would be more than 5,000 cars, because the metro station was not designed for the capacity required for this use.

For sure. And even if they rebuild the metro station that was just finished last year (!), people are still going to try and drive. There just isn’t the capacity no matter how much wishful thinking there is.

It’s going to cost Virginia taxpayers a bundle.

The school campus is also set to be based in PY. Wonder how that impacts traffic, space, layout, finances for city? That's kinda a lot that there with just Rt 1 right? And wouldn't they need to readjust metro with the campus alone? I don't get how that metro design got approved. It's horrible currently cause nothings there and for the future it needs to have more access so it's got to be redesigned. How do people get hired??

I don't know anyone who supports this other than rubber stamp Justin Wilson.

Potomac Yard isn't centrally located like DC (obviously).

Potomac Yard is also physically restricted compared to Navy Yard, which it will never be.

Interestingly, the Potomac Yard metro station cost $370 million dollars. It was supposed to have been paid for by the business it spurred in terms of real estate and sales taxes from the immediate area. But the stipulation for the Arena project is for all of the taxes in the area to support the debt obligation there.

So what happens to the funding already staked for the metro station?

This post is an excellent description of Alexandria voters.

The naysayers on this thread largely comprise a small group of petulant Maryland residents who think the world revolves around Bethesda.

Maybe a few NIMBYs in Virginia, too.

Literally, the only fans benefiting from this move are Alex residents. The rest of us, whether elsewhere in NoVa, DC or MD, lose out. Very simple.

that is fine since they will end up paying for the whole thing anyhow

It will be all Virginians that will have to pay. Virginia will be the guarantor of the bond.

Yes, I keep saying posters say that Alexandria taxpayers will be screwed, but Alexandria is only committing $50-60 million to the project. The other $2B is being guaranteed not by Alexandria taxpayers, but by State of Virginia taxpayers.

So again I ask, why would taxpayers in the southwestern part of the state want to subsidize billionaire Ted Leonsis?

I imagine those taxpayers don't mind benefiting from the state sales tax that is mysteriously higher in Fairfax County.

Because they don’t know it’s going to happen?

Youngkin and Richmond have not been transparent about the funding for this project.
