It didn't spread as far. I remember feeling the same in the beginnings of the outbreak as for this coronavirus -- but it didn't get as far and so petered out.

Same here. It was right after Lehman and the economic collapse so news may have been suppressed.

They are relying on people who test positive to self report their locations and interactions which could be faulty. I'm not suggesting they are intentionally being untruthful but there could be mistakes.
