Weekly average deaths as of yesterday are about HALF (~1100/day) of what they were at the peak (~2200/day). (7-day average calculations smooth through the ups and downs over the week, especially weekends, when reporting seems to be "held" until Monday or Tuesday.)
USA new cases daily are down from the peak too, but not by as much, likely due to much increased testing.
All of these trends hold up for the US excluding NY as well.
