Even assuming that this is all true for you and your family personally, I can 100 percent guarantee you that GWMS or Hammond, where there are hundreds of kids per grade (more than at my child's entire ES) and up to 7 teachers per student for various subjects, is not doing this.

We are at an ES, filled out the form for hybrid and we never got emails or phone calls from the school. NBD. I had no expectation that if we filled it out that we would be contacted.

It sounds like this ACPS teacher did a great job contacting their students and that their child's school went above and beyond. But that is not everyone's experience. There is no need to call people names and imply that they are dumb and call their kids names simply because they have had a different experience than you.

And as others have written, the issue is that in December ACPS and Hutchings repeatedly said they would work with parents when the time to go back came. Now that time is here and they aren't offering any flexibility, understanding or patience. Three things that they've been asking that parents give them since last March.

ACPS' return is already a mess. They are citing "health protocols" for the use of playgrounds that aren't being used by their own child care partners or the city. They are citing equity as a reason NOT to get as many kids as possible into hybrid. The latest from our school is that the hybrid kids won't be allowed to use the books in the classrooms because that wouldn't be equitable to the kids still doing full virtual. Parents who chose hybrid still don't have any concrete information to figure out work schedules and child care. ACPS central office's rigidity and extremely poor communication is on full display now.

Like any relationship, this one should be a two way street. But it's not. And parents still have no where to go.

When the PTA comes looking for donations, I will remember that they never even bothered to ask questions of ACPS. I'll remember it when the signer(s) of that PTAC op-ed runs for elected office in Alexandria. When these groups were most needed by parents, they abandoned them.

Since I am guessing that most people who did not fill out the form and thus just defaulted to virtual are non-white and non-affluent, I am not sure how that comes into play here.

Just out of curiosity why are many people on this forum SO certain that certain populations in our community did not understand how to correctly fill out the surveys?

No one is saying that they didn't understand how to fill it out. People are saying that they didn't do so for whatever reason, which is an entirely different thing.

I personally contacted all of my students families that are considered title 1/FARM and my own child’s school called me because I hadn’t completed mine early. I can guarantee you that every effort to contact families was or should have been exhausted.

I am getting so angry how some people on this forum bring up equity and certain groups as they are their spokesperson, but it’s only to benefit themselves. If you looked at the data. It’s a certain demographic that wanted to return to hybrid.

Trust me I want to make sure that my students are heard and seen.

You are a liar. What is your name nd what is your school?

Are you serious??

I am NOT a liar. I am speaking from my personal experience and don’t appreciate you asking for my name and school. So what school does your precious little snowflake attend? What is your name?

DP. So now you're claiming that you didn't receive ANY weekly newsletters from the Principal of your child's school? That you didn't see ANY notices on the ACPS website? That the PTA from your child's school didn't send out ANY notices about the sign-up? REALLY? Yes, you are a liar.
I am a parent btw. A parent who is calling you a liar.

How am I a liar when I clearly stated that I contacted my families personally AND received a call from my sons school?

No, you did not state that you never received a call. You stated that you were not contacted. An email is contact. The fact that you CHOSE to IGNORE it makes you a liar.

I am getting sick and tired of people like you needing special attention and claiming that your treatment has been inequitable. It hasn't been. Step up to the plate and be a better parent and be a better, more responsible community member. You received the information and you should have responded to it. The poster was clearly referring to people who don't have the same advantages as you do.

YES, I AM SHAMING YOU. You have a responsibility to this community to be a better parent and act on your responsibilities. If the school system sent you an opportunity to respond then you should have done that. Stop wasting their time and stop wasting the time of the rest of us.

Now I am going to speak real slowly for you to understand what I said. I think this thread may have jumped ship, but I stayed that as an ACPS teacher I contacted (personally spoke to each of my students families) if they wanted to be hybrid or stay virtual.

Additionally, I received emails AND a phone call from MY child’s school confirming our preference. How in the world you got that I “never received contact or chose not to respond” from that is beyond me...

Was that SLOW ENOUGH for you to understand?

DP: and I am saying is what you did (which is admirable) was not done universally within ACPS (although personally I am not trying to go virtual). And, most importantly, ACPS said the choice form in December was not binding and then reneged on that.

The ACPS rep on this board didn't do ACPS any favors by coming on here and telling parents that they don't care about students, referring to trying to start fake arguments about statements that were never actually stated and calling people liars because their personal experience differs from their own.

The fact remains that ACPS mishandled the Family Choice form and the reopening already.

From a December ACPS Express: "Please know that we are committed to working with families throughout this transition process knowing that circumstances may change and families may need to adjust their choice in the future. "

From another December ACPS Express: "Please take a moment to share with us your choice as they stand today regarding your student(s) intention to return to our classrooms beginning in January 2021. We know things may change as the progression of COVID-19 changes and we understand that what you indicate today may differ when the time comes to reopen. "

Totally agreed. On top of that, I sent an email and was told the choice is not binding.
But is there anything we can do about it as parents? To me, it seems we are all powerless and directly at their mercy.

Hutchings said at a SB meeting on 12/3: "WE WANT TO WORK WITH OUR FAMILIES, WE KNOW THERE ARE SITUATIONS THAT CAN HAPPEN BETWEEN NOW AND A MONTH FROM NOW. WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH OUR INDIVIDUAL FAMILIES."

These statements from December just highlight the profound issues ACPS has with their communication strategy (if it can ever be called that) and it's communication team. A simple acknowledgement of past statements and an explanation of why they can no longer follow through on them would have gone a long way. But it's too late for that.

Thank you! This is the issue and basis for criticism. ACPS told parents and families one thing, we relied on those representations, and now they’ve taken back what they explicitly put in writing. How can we trust this system? They clearly had no plan to reopen, but their hand was forced by the state and this is their way of not giving families choices and equal opportunity due to the lack of preparation.

I am an employee AND a parent of ACPS. I find it curious that I am being attacked for stating my personal experience on this subject (and I stared that).

I am in complete agreement that this was handled poorly and that as parents we were told that what we picked was not binding. I too am
Concerned about school returning to 5 days a week as I can’t imagine that. I also agree that CO was never prepared for us to start the year off hybrid.

My issue is that I find many people on this and other forums saying that they are advocating for many of the families that I serve when those families don’t want hybrid.

Myself and every othe teacher (that I know) have been working above and beyond since last March and often times are called “lazy and don’t really want to work”.
Trust me I want to make sure that my students are heard and seen.

What I don’t understand is why ACPS personnel on this thread are attacking parents (other than you are just following Hutchings example on how to treat parents). Plus, this argument about whether or not parents who did not fill out the choice form were contacted (I don’t doubt some were contacted just not all) is a side issue. The issue at hand is that ACPS’ statement that the choice form was not binding turned out to be untrue. That’s the issue and it’s Hutchings’ issue and not that of personnel of individual schools.
