They have always done that with the Cognt test or at least when my child took it. They asked why do you want to go to the magnet program.

It was 250 words, which is about two paragraphs.

From the updated FAQ:

"7. What data will be considered in the criteria-based program? How does the interest-based program admission process work?
The admission process uses a multiple measures approach that includes both district-level and externally-developed assessment of students. The data that will be considered include the student applicant responses, report card, student services^, student application/personal submission, and an external assessment. The Cognitive Abilities Test and essay submission will not be administered this year."
