Twenty years ago, 70 percent of TJ students were white; today, 79 percent are minority, most from Asian immigrant families. The proposed lottery plan would decimate the representation of minorities at TJ, with the school soon becoming predominately white. Assuming that all of the students who qualify for the lottery will apply for admissions to TJ. the percentage of Asian students gaining admission to TJ will be slashed by more than half from 73% admitted in the Class of 2024 to 33.52%. In contrast, the percentage of white students gaining admission to TJ will more than double from 18% admitted in the Class of 2024 to 44.88%, making white families the plan’s greatest beneficiaries and dramatically shrinking the school’s overall percentage of minorities.

Yep. It’s to help white people game the system.
And screw over blacks and hispanics and Asians all at the same time.
Why we can’t make a humanities magnet for them is beyond me.
Whites can't stomach that Asians are excelling above and beyond white kids.
False. We’re cool with it actually. (See how I just spoke for my entire race because apparently we are all homogenous and align our thoughts and opinions according to skin color?![]()
In all seriousness though, my family is completely fine with it. We’re a bit too lazy to compete at that level of intensity. And I think the prize should go to the kids/families who are dedicated and committed to doing the work. You’ve earned it. Period.
Agree

Then the proposed lottery at TJ will be in trouble if someone files lawsuit..
Legal challenge is a sure thing.
And the new system is a goner under the new 6-3 Supreme Court.
I hope fcps realizes this and not waste millions in taxpayer money.
Fcps will ruin TJ, URM numbers will not go up significantly and they end up with bruised gpa and end up spending millions of taxpayer money defending the new system that will 100% be not allowed by court.

I am not as familiar with the NOVA population but in NYC, where I have many friends who teach or are school administrators, I know that for many URM families there (who are Dominican and/or Puerto Rican, so the population in NOVA is a little different) they are very Catholic and the end goal or dream is not the STEM public magnets but rather getting a scholarship or aid or saving enough for getting into Catholic school. To them, that is the American Dream or end goal, not Stuy or Bronx Science. My friend taught in Queens and that is what all the top kids in her classes and their families talked to her about, not Stuy.
Ding ding ding!
You can make it a lottery but they still won’t even apply.
+1
FCPS is chasing a problem that mostly doesn't exist. The URMs don't want to go to TJ. For those who do want to apply, I am sure everyone agrees FCPS should increase the percentage admitted for URMs.
You don’t think the flagship school for the county and possibly the state having negligible numbers of black and Hispanic students is a problem?
