It seems like it would be difficult to completely hide something like that for a decade when you are big fish in small town. There are much easier ways to be a closeted gay politician than going through all of this. The incentive to “MeToo” a controversial politician with many, many enemies would be irresistible.
Given that Gaetz is royalty in the panhandle, and his family is rich, it’s possible that this is a legit attempt at nobles oblige by a wealthy family. It’s not unusual for rich guys to have paternalistic (in the socio-political sense) relationships with people from poorer backgrounds. Think Kato Kaelin.
Of course rich do things like this, but that's not what Gaetz claimed. And Gaetz didn't claim this was some "Big Brother, Big Sister" I see the kid sometimes on the weekend sort of thing and I let him borrow my car for prom, either. He said he's basically this teen's dad, raising him for 8 years. If it's really just Matt's filthy rich parents being charitable, fine. But that's not in any way how Gaetz characterized the relationship.
Is it true this kid is good at sports? Maybe they were hoping he'd be a soccer or baseball prodigy, a recruited ace at the local high school or college the Gaetz funneled him to? I've seen that too. We're "charitable ... it just happens the African boys we adopted are 7 feet tall and are going to play on our real son's basketball team this winter."
