IT person here. From waht I saw, the issue is not on BB's side. THey have plenty of capacity. It's the login side (used for more than just BB, also other services). That part uses FCPS servers and they couldn't handle the load.

BB should have anticipated that.

Nowhere did I say "gifting" a laptop.

This is my first post on the topic. Yes, fcps required every high schooler to take a laptop this year. Most rented it. Some got it for free. Regardless of who was required to pay or not, every student in high school was given a laptop by fcps this year.

The first poster said "giving" not "gifting", so she is correct.

So, while they were spending money right and left giving every student the same laptop, no attention was paid to ensuring that online support was available to students. As far as the equity part--they've had all year to work on that.

What do these people do?

Who got the contract for all those computers?

I can’t find a link to the meeting on FCPS website.

There was not explanation on the call of HOW they were going to be increasing capacity.

The lack of IT infrastructure and vendor oversight is appalling. BB could’ve done better, but they were going out the door as FCPS was moving on to something new. Not on BB to manage phaseout plans. I wish I saved the emails saying that FCPS was moving away from BB. This has been going on for awhile. The bumps in the road as far as the sudden load increase should expected, but not extreme like this.

In my experience, blowups like this get people angry, but the IT people responsible for them always seem to land up in a better position or with increased pay,. That’s cause they’ve got experience that will help them on the next project. Sigh. The ones who don’t have the blowups, don’t reap the big rewards.

If I was a a betting man, I'd say Monday's not gonna happen. Or it will, and there will be some kind of major failure again.

DD’s teachers have setup Google Classrooms. They set them up during the break. Then they were told that they must use BB or something, because their instructions changed from ‘Go to Google Classroom’ , to ‘Go to BB, where we have a whole bunch of resources, including links to Google Classroom’. They were also using BBCollaborate just fine, before they were told that the kids have to go through BB to get to Collaborate, creating further bottlenecks.

So what is the way forward ? Are our children going to receive some online instruction come Monday or not ?

I have no problem paying a superintendent of a large county-wide school system $300K or paying other top officials over $200K. This region is full of people who make much more for less stress.

Even so, FCPS's current top brass isn't up the job. Brabrand isn't. Luftglass isn't. Platenberg isn't.

They should all be sacked ASAP.
