I agree on Sanibel, Amelia Island, Hilton Head (and any South Carolina beaches), Wrightsville Beach ... and don't get me started on Ocean City, MD (just yucky).

The skiing's great at Vail, but agree that the village is kind of meh, and being located right on the interstate isn't too great. Aspen's also overrated and overpriced.

+2
The city was ok, the few shops open are overly packed and not the best quality for food/coffee. The skiing was really fun though so it is worth going and I plan to go back. I also like the tourists it atttacts, everyone is there to relax and have fun. The tenth is amazing!

I don't feel like it's all that negative. It's more about expectations and different preferences.

Really? It seems like a bunch of spoiled people who hate everything and everywhere.

Honestly, I don't see most posts like that. I have a post in here, I own that I'm lucky to be able to have gone, but I said it didn't reflect the hype and/or popular descriptions of the place. You can enjoy yourself and find positive, a lot of positive, in all your travels but you can also find they they didn't match up to the expectations you had or the general "idea" of what the place is portrayed as.

Outer Banks - I like quiet but it is very cheesy here and even the “nature” experiences felt manufactured.

San Diego - I expected to love it here but it felt very soul-less. A million times prefer LA or a more tropical vacation.

It's having the opposite effect on me - it's making me want to get out of this area that's full of snobby complainers even more! I haven't traveled a ton, but I can't think of a single place I've been that I would complain about here. Even less than ideal vacations/activities have SOMETHING to recommend them, and I just prefer to focus on the positives and fun experiences.

Good point.

And you should definitely go there in the off-season before the tourist hoards arrive. I went to Rome in April and it was pretty empty of tourists - best way to experience the city.

Geneva: so boring, over priced, and just....blah. However, the rest of Switzerland is incredible.

P

I can understand going to Rome on vacation, but why would anyone think that Geneva was a vacation destination unless you’re there for the motor show or maybe a work conference. There are much better places to go in Switzerland.

+1.
I live about 90 miles from Niagara Falls NY and get there every once in awhile, usually just traveling through to Canada.
Although the Falls itself is spectacular, the city is a huge disappointment. It’s old and dirty.
Niagara Falls Canada, however, is very beautiful, albeit very touristy. Much better view of the Falls as well on the Canadian side.

I was underwhelmed by the Sea Pines plantation on Hilton Head. I just didn’t understand the hype. I enjoyed our stay in Shipyard much more.

I also thought Isle of Palms was a complete letdown. Ugly beaches with ugly brown water. Other than the big houses, what is the appeal?

Tybee Island was cute for a day visit, but we found ourselves bored after that. Their beaches sucked too. Full of pebbles, wind and biting gnats. Boring as hell too.
