And that sucks for those of us with autoimmune disorders who now can't get our prescriptions filled, like me. So now I'm worried about weathering a flare-up while having the coronavirus.
Apparently, doctors are now ordering it for their friends and families and asking for it in larger quantities than anyone would need to fight Covid, which is something like 12 pills tops. The pharmacist ranted about this for about a half an hour this morning, and told me good luck getting it.
It's the new hand sanitizer.
No, it's not. There is a ton coming. It's not the pharmacist's job to pick and choose who gets to live and who gets to die. The pharmacist should call the prescribing doctor if they have an issue. Report them if they think it's being abused.
Yes, it is. People would need 12 pills to be treated for Covid, and doctors are requesting it in large doses. Why? To keep on hand for themselves and their friends and families and god knows who else? This is hoarding. Like hand sanitizer and toilet paper. If everyone took what they needed, we'd be okay.
NP here. So now you have a conspiracy against doctors hoarding it for their friends and family? You people are too much. DH could have hoarded sanitizer and face masks for his friends and family from the hospital but we have none. It's at the hospital to use when healthcare professionals see patients.
It’s being widely reported that it’s being hoarded inappropriately.

His doctors are trying it.

a lot of people are, maybe not in the us. at my sister's hospital they have 400+ cases, only 2 dead. they have been using it for weeks.

Most of those risks increase with time you’ve been on this drug. Toxicity risks include but are not limited to retinal damage. I don’t think chloroquine is prescribed in the US due to its high toxicity, but hydroxychloroquine is prescribed to many many lupus and rheumatoid arthritis patients as a life saving medication. It takes time to build up in the system which is why it’s important to keep a steady supply of it if you suffer from these diseases and this medication helps. Why it works for autoimmune diseases is still up for discussion, but they believe it modulates the immune system in some way, which makes sense (to me) if it helps covid sufferers as they suspect one reason they become dangerously sick is that the immune system is staging an overwhelming response to the virus. The dose given for malaria prevention is quite small compared to the dose given for lupus, etc. (example I can take 200-400 mg daily while anti malaria dose I think is 400mg WEEKLY). I know all of this because I take the drug and am beyond angered and frustrated that my supply is in peril because of Trump’s recklessness.
how is he reckless - he merely repeated what was in the news.
It has been in the news for weeks. I responded to a thread on it here before the virus even started spreading widely here. It was only after he expressed false hope in his presser and on Twitter that there was a run on the medication. He could have said “There’s early but promising research ongoing into treatment...” without specifying what that was. He could have queried those in industry as he’s so fond of doing to see what supply was like. He could have consulted with trade groups or state regulators to see if anything needed to be put in place to insure supply for those who needed it to survive before making broad announcements. I’m confident he did none of those things.

I'm a left leaning Democrat, btw. The fact that some random people got confused and took something highly toxic should not be a national narrative. It is a personal tragedy.
I agree, but the PRESIDENT of the United States should not be tweeting out confusing advice like this, FFS.
there was nothing confusing about it - he touted the FDA approved drug that is in fact used by many doctors (hence shortages), not cleaning supplies.

Yeah but he's conditioned his followers to be skeptical of doctors and scientists and heaven forbid they trust a deep state agency like the FDA. His word is what his occult followers obey.

ffs. we are doing clinical trials in the US. did you not know that? NOBODY, literally nobody, said we shouldn’t do trials or use the drug appropriately in the interim.
Honestly, if you read the media, it's ridiculous for Trump to even suggest that it could be promising. Dr. Fauci reportedly said "Dr. Anthony Fauci, made clear that any evidence about drug therapies being tested at the moment was strictly “anecdotal” and not the product of a “clinical trial.”
“You really can’t make any definitive statement about it,” Fauci said.
Moments earlier, Fauci was asked whether there was any evidence that one such drug— hydroxychloroquine — might be used as an effective prophylactic measure against coronavirus.
"The answer is no," Fauci replied."
The above would lend one to believe that the US isn't even looking at it. But, that's the media and not real life.
fauci is a doddering old fool and needs to go away ASAP. we are in a huge mess and to a great extent it’s his fault. also surgeon general. this is colossal failure on the part of CDC and FDA. trump, too, by nobody expected him to know anything about this. i am just some rando and i ordered masks for my family in January. why didn’t the government do the same? that’s not trumps fault.
trump is the PRESIDENT. it was his job to prepare us.
