Most people would never even have the option of a reality TV show. Kate did and that is the option she went with. That show was her family's bread and butter for years.
They ALL got all sorts of perks from doing the show, it's not like their lives would have been better if they had stayed stuck in a too small house and never traveled anywhere.

Are you Kate?
No, most people would not handle it that way, because they aren't vicious to their own kids that way.
Stressed out, overwhelmed people who are shouldering the weight of an enormous responsibility all by themselves sometimes say and do regretful things. This thing with the teddy bear was not good but I think Kate was beyond frustrated with the lack of common sense in giving 6 very small children chewing gum. Kate was running a tight ship on a strict budget and the stupidity of it all just set her off.
Jon often did stupid things just like this and I think that Kate just blew her top.
She wasn’t alone or by herself. She had an army of supportive help.
Everyone blows up occasionally but Kate’s been filmed multiple times going off the rails over the years over little things. She’s a control freak who can’t manage her anger. She bullied Colin. Then Hannah, which is why she’s now living with her dad too.
Her twins deliberately embarrassed her in an interview:

Because it’s the only power they have.
Tight budget? TLC funded EVERYTHING. Date night, outing with the kids, everything! If TLC didnt pay, they didnt go.
Kate was feeding and clothing her children on her income from TLC. She couldn't afford to be replacing items that got carelessly ruined.
And, of course, there was a reason she was doing the reality t.v. show - it paid the family's bills and made their lives easier. She had 8 kids to support, that is why they did the show. It's not like she could have just gone back to work as a nurse and supported her large family on that salary.
The second guessing being done is unreal. None of us have been in her shoes and if we were I'll bet that we would have chosen TLC over the likes of Jon.

They seem really close to Kate and I have no doubt there are repercussions from Kate towards any kids who want to spend time with Jon or show any positive feelings towards Jon.
Glad to see Hannah and Collin getting to have a normal, stable adolescence.

Yep, and the video evidence shows no reason why he should have checked out, especially since Kate is the perfect example of calm, composure, kindness, and all things good. Why would he ever leave such an open hearted, amazing soul?
Getting a divorce is not the same as checking out on your kids. He did both. Kate being a very difficult personality is not a reason to abandon your children, which is what he did.
I have sympathy for Kate because in a lot of ways she's a single mother and that means she does everything and is judged against her mistakes, while the absent father does essentially nothing but is judged against some non-standard where "at least he didn't make the mistake the person who has the kids 24/7/365 made 2.5 years ago on Thursday."
I see this IRL too - guys who do essentially nothing get praised for seeing their kids on the holidays while moms get dragged for sending the kids to school with mismatched socks.
Kate doesn't have to be a sweetheart for Jon to be trash.
He didn't check out. He was not allowed contact. He fought in court and lost. What else can he do? He showed up for visitation and he was refused the kids. He went to court and judge did nothing except say send the kids. Do you realize how many fathers have that experience and then get blamed? He should have been given 50/50 and not she should have been held in contempt for the visitation refusal. He wasn't an absent father. He went to his visitation which is all he was allowed. She turned the kids against him and they "refused" to go with him.
You're claiming some contradictory things. He certainly was allowed contact, that's what the judge saying "send the kids" means. He said that 4 of them refused to visit him, which you're saying (as he did) is because she turned them against him. Half of your kids refusing to visit you is not the same as "not allowed contact." And when 2 of the 4 that don't want to see you are the oldest, it doesn't make a strong case for parental alienation. If it was Kate feeding them lies then the younger ones would have been more susceptible than the ones who had more memories of their dad.
Those kids knew which parent was taking care of them and it wasn't Jon. The oldest kids were angry at their father for walking away from their family like he did.
