Totally get it, though it may have been a regift. According to some on this thread, you should either love it anyway, write a letter at the beginning of the year saying don’t get me any gifts, or lovingly display and use the mug and devour the contents, even if you don’t care for them.


All you have to do is say thank you -- that's all.

I'm a teacher. I like the gifts. I email thank you notes, often the day of.

NP here. I get it. I wouldn't want all those tchotchkes either.

Usually the room moms send out a page at the beginning of the year saying welcome to the class, these are you room moms, this is what we will be doing this year, these are the dates of the field trips (information to be sent closer to that date), this is how many parties to expect (on or two only!), and this is how much we will need toward those (one or two) parties, in addition to your teacher's year end gift card. Oh, and BTW, this date is (teacher's) birthday, so we will be sending reminders to hand make a card for that day. If you wish (there is no obligation) teacher likes (for example) the occasional Starbucks visit, or Smith brand ginger decaffeinated tea or Jones brand white chocolate (or whatever 3-5 ideas you care to list). It is not that difficult.

Then, at least the teacher gets a few things that are useful to him or her.

Nope. I'm super good with not giving anything to the teachers. I just don't want to hear the bitching. Especially when I am continually asked for money I don't have for every f-ing holiday and appreciation week or day or whatever made up thing. If I wanted to see a collection plate, I'd go to church.


Then don’t give or show your appreciation. Simple enough.

And you think if a teacher said at the beginning of the year, “please get me nothing for teacher appreciation week,” (which is months away), that wouldn’t be odd and parents would ignore it anyway?
