Cons: made our neighborhood school undesirable ($2 mil houses yet kids go private or lottery to charters).
Pros: we got a ton of free stuff from that school. Free aftercare, camps, activities, backpacks and such.
We have made it off the waitlist to a charter and are now leaving the school though. It will be interesting to compare the two schools.

Each year parents complete Impact Aid forms for LEA's-Local Education Authorities. Technical name for school districts or school divisions. Trump and Obama tried to decrease Impact Aid funding:

Students who are living in federally subsidized low-rent housing;
Students who reside on federal property and whose parents are employed on federal property
Students whose parents are civilian employees of the Federal Government but do not reside on federal property
Students with a parent/legal guardian who is a member of the military services.

If you live in MOCO, work on federal property in DC, apparently there is no impact aid. The form lists sites in MD only. DC also doesn't get the money.

FCPS gets about 3 million. LEA's do NOT get impact aid for known unaccompanied minors [released to sponsors] even after the post DACA surge.

So an NIH researcher living in Rockville produces impact aid but an illegal unaccompanied minor released to a sponsor in MOCO does not.

Although the city has grown enormously, economic prosperity has not come with the growth. It is the 11th poorest city, only 75% completed high school. Industries which prey on illegal labor have relocated there and have kept wages very depressed for the whole community. Please do some research on these local economies.

Were they German who landed in Pennsylvania? Swiss speaking German? Swedes in Delaware? I mean landed here legally in the 1600 and 1700's pre French and Indian War. There were issues based on volumes of Germans not knowing English. That was rectfied in the 1700's. Perhaps some French in Maine but you can check back on census data if people spoke English. Honestly we had grandparents and great grandparents from Europe and they spoke accented English. You'd have to go back centuries.


Plus the Eastern Europeans often lived in neighborhoods with others and there were many languages spoken. [ Chicago and Polish might be an exception]Note the country of origin changes on census data for many European countries of origin.

So bottom line was in the 1700's we went through the press 2 for German. That stopped. Now we have press 2 for Spanish. Note the dialects do present difficulty for public schools. Plus many illegals are not literate in their own language.


On taxes. Office of Refugee Resettlement provides information on release of unaccompanied minors since each must be released to a sponsor. Fiscal year 2017:

PG= 1056. Fairfax =971. MOCO=782. One year only. The feds pay about $70/ student. These are only undocs accounted for but each number for 1 year = a school building. PG and FX over 4 years got 2 high schools worth or 1 high school and 2 middle schools. Small class sizes and social services and additional school capacity are not covered by the $70/student annually.


If a developer build new construction that yielded 5000 students in a 4 year period each jurisdiction would have gone ballistic.

DP here. The fact that over 1,000 undocumented minors who entered this country in 2014 were “settled” in Fairfax County tells me that illegal immigrants are indeed in our public schools. The exact number of illegal aliens in the DC area public schools is not known (because schools cannot report immigration status), but to deny they are there is a flat out lie.

Is the numbers of illegals in public schools sufficient to make property tax hikes (if any) noticeable?

What an ignorant perspective! The more recent immigrants, in fact, have assimilated, in many ways, more than their Irish, Italian, etc, predecessors. Take note that Little Italy in Baltimore and NYC, long standing Irish bars in many major cities, Little Havana in Miami, and Chinatown in NYC and SF would not exist if those communities "assimilated" quickly. Same with Little Saigon in NoVa and Hasidic communities in NYC.
