This. UVA is not as well known nationally as people around here think it is.
This kind of post always makes me laugh. The only people who haven't heard of UVA are so uneducated, it doesn't matter. This is true of nearly every state flagship, and top 100 school. You'd have to live under a rock not to know of them. Plus, they are currently the #1 ranked team in college basketball, so even non-academic sports fans are aware of them.
Actually not true. We hosted a Chinese student as part of m sons student exchange program and both he and a few of his colleagues also had not heard of UVA which honestly shocked us. It was interesting, there were other schools they have not heard of as well but that one really surprised me.

But, unless I missed it, the OP didn't say HOW much in merit money. My DS was offered $28,000 to attend two different colleges (he had not applied; the colleges wanted him for his ACT score). Even with the $28,000, the privates were still more expensive (and significantly less prestigious) than UVA/ So DS turned down the $28K scholarships and is at UVA and loves it.

Anonymous wrote:Miami is a good school, but it has a stigma of being a "rich kid party school" that is more focused on glamorous lifestyles than academics.
I'm not sure if that's any worse than UVA's reputation of being the safety school for preppy NOVA kids.
Either way, neither of these schools are worse $200K+.
