Lots of people should do lots of stuff that they don't actually do. If people had gotten into bad crashes because of the slippery roads, and MCPS had said, "It's not our fault, they should have been more careful on the icy patches!", how would that have gone over?


The same way every other state in the North East does-the kids go to school. You don't cancel school because you fear some teenage driver might slip. If you are that worried, drive your kid to school.

+ 1. I personally do not care if the MCPS holidays falls only on Christian and Jewish holidays. I would like to see all the above that is bolded. I am an Hindu who has no expectation of getting Diwali off and don't feel slighted about my festivals not being celebrated by MCPS. A "Happy Diwali" tweet from some official would be more than sufficient if push comes to shove. I will take a mental health day for myself and the kids if I am inclined to celebrate any festival. SHEESH!!!

I agree. They're piloting that in two elementary schools in MoCo and a lot of people (including quite a few teachers, I imagine) were screaming about how they didn't want to lose their summers and that their Precious Child needed all 12 weeks to do some athletic activity full-time.

Most of the roads that were "too dangerous" were not state roads but county roads............

That is exactly what the school system wants you to do. how about blame the county department of transportation for not doing their job the get the roads ready?

I don't know whether to blame Maryland the state or MoCo, but I agree that snow removal is an abomination here. There's no reason that side streets shouldn't have been plowed with a 2 hour delayed start with that minimal amount of snow.

I don't know whether to blame Maryland the state or MoCo, but I agree that snow removal is an abomination here. There's no reason that side streets shouldn't have been plowed with a 2 hour delayed start with that minimal amount of snow.

MCPS wasn't happy about that either. But evidently they decided that sending the buses, teenage drivers, and walkers of all ages out on slippery roads and sidewalks was a worse alternative. I'm not going to second-guess that decision.

I do care that my child is hanging out at home today instead of learning. And I hate the poster who parrots "school is not daycare" over and over again. Yes, it is not daycare, but if you're a working parent (as most of us are) without a nanny at your beck and call, snow days represent an inconvenience.
