I attended Chetham's School of Music in Manchester in the 80's on a full scholarship granted by the British Embassy. The local students kept on dissing me as they knew I was not the daughter of a foreign dignitary which at the time included the granddaughter of King Hussein of Jordan, the children of the King of Malaysia, as well as the son of a billionaire prince from Saudi Arabia). My safe box containing my spending money for the entire semester disappeared from my closet. During lunch, students looked at me and laughed, stating that the money of the Queen was being wasted on a representative of a third world country. As my roommate's boyfriend sneaked inside the bedroom and spent the night with her, I asked for a different roommate; Not only was my request denied, I was told that I had to keep an open mind and that this was not the Middle East. I was 16 at the time. I had already visited France and Italy and never experienced such rude and discriminating people.
Here in the USA, My family and I have experienced discrimination numerous times, but never overtly.

Unfortunately, I can't make the same observations about many Americans.

Some of my Scottish relatives are incredibly snobbish where Americans are concerned, and they don't hesitate to say what they think of Americans. It's mostly the older ones, but the snobbery is still there with a few of the younger ones. Of course, they always say "not you, of course!"

We always spend our visits being vocally ashamed about Trump or whatever war we declared on somebody, which is true, but we feel like we have to make an extra effort when abroad. I think my 83-year-old mom complained about Trump to every single taxi driver and waiter we had on a recent trip, to the point even DD got sick of it.

I have traveled throughout the UK and don't feel Brits are overwhelmingly rude. Sure, in the cities maybe a bit more. But that's the case everywhere.

In rural areas especially, I've found people to be very kind and warm. And even more so in Ireland and Scotland, who I've found to be some of the nicest, kindest people (as a whole) that I've met.

Unfortunately, I can't make the same observations about many Americans.

I lived there for two years, and have visited numerous times since. There are issues in Britain and other European countries, but I think we as Americans take the cake on widely and loudly expressing our arrogance. I'm all for being proud.
