Umm, because the statue in question was in Charlottesville?? Honestly, I question the intelligence of most of you. UVA did not host this rally; neither did the city of Charlottesville. The neo-nazis came there from elsewhere to protest the removal of the Lee statue. Why can't you people get your facts straight?
Well, you think the White Supremacists just marched here in Charlottesville? They applied for a permit which the city council approved.

But the rally organizer Jason Kessler is a UVA graduate and Charlottesville resident -https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/jason-kessler. Alt-right leader Richard Spencer is also a UVA graduate. That doesn't directly implicate the school, but it undermines the claim that he march and rally was entirely run by outsiders.

UVA is located in a town with a significant amount of Confederate history and tributes. The violence maybe a symptom of the city - and university - moving from an extremely racist past towards a less racist future. Trying to remove itself from its past - growing pains. I think that a good thing but the history is there. Seems silly to deny it. That history brings baggage.

So - DC is going to be a senior next year in a FCPS school and performing at a level that there is at least 50% chance DC would get into UVA. We prepaid Virginia college tuition for all 4 years. I love UVA - would love to have gone there ... DC not so much. I was going to require DC to apply to UVA no matter what ... now if DC says, "you know, I really don't think I want to apply to UVA" - I won't press it.
