It seems to be a very white bread, southern-fried enrollment.
I went to another southern private, so I know the type.
The kids probably never went to school with any POC, or jewish people.
They would stick out in an urbane environment.

I want to make a thread of all the funny typos in this forum. And the type would probably prefer an urbane environment.

Small and still not super-well know outside the South, but punches above its weight when it comes to Rhodes Scholars, grad school admissions, fancy jobs....

They do have a hallowed literary tradition- Sewanee Review and such. Oldest continuously published literary quarterly in the US, per Wikipedia, FWIW.

Agree on writing! A teacher at my son’s school (upper school/English) is a great teacher, writer, and all around good human. He went there. Very impressed.

I don't know much about the campus (though I've heard it's beautiful) or the culture, but every Sewanee grad I've encountered in the professional world has been an unusually good writer. It's apparently a big focus there.

All the Southern schools have bad histories. (So do a lot of the northern schools, they just hide it better). But they are doing their best to show that the past is truly in the past.

My kid got in with 20k merit and financial aid. They were very generous. My DC loves that it’s in the mountains and such a beautiful campus. They have 90 percent acceptances into MBA programs and many kid get jobs after graduation. They really care about each student. I know that area has a bad past but they trying to make things better. I didn’t see much diversity but they are trying. They are part of the Posse program which gives inner city kids that qualify a free ride.

My kid just got into Sewanee with $30k merit aid! Not his top choice, only b/c it is so small and rural, but it's a great school.

No, it's not Harvard, but it's a very good SLAC, roughly equivalent in ranking to Connecticut College, Occidental, Skidmore, Denison, Trinity, Dickinson, Union, Furman, etc. Just... in the south. Which I know is off-putting for some, but like those other schools, it gets kids from all over.

There is no formal dress code, but there is a tradition of dressing nicely (smart casual) for classes. But plenty of students go in jeans or sweats.

It's a very sweet school. I don't think they push the kids hard, but a motivated kid will get a great education. Good faculty, beautiful place.

And not all Southern rich kids, although that element is there. There are lots of preppy kids from NY, New England etc.: kids who are bright but not academic hotshots and who want a SLAC. Also, lots of first generation college kids from the rural south.

No they don't wear coat and tie to class. It's not a real dress code but students prefer to not dress in pj's and sweats. Jeans with holes and short shorts are not very popular on campus as you may see on other campuses. I wouldn't say it is overly preppy at all.

Sewanee has produced more Rhodes Scholars than Amherst, Middlebury or Haverford.
