FWIW Daily Mail is now saying they destroyed a gas station bathroom, the clerk asked them to pay, they refused and started to leave, at which point the clerk/a security guard pointed a gun at them demanding money, and then they paid and left. I could see how that in Lochte's mind was a robbery . . . .

I bet they were attempting to buy drugs or something and got held up. Why else would Lochte say that he didn't want to call the police because he didn't want to get in trouble? He is not exactly a bright kid, he says what he means.

Umm, they went to a gas station and something happened there. Either one of the swimmers got into a fight, or something else happened, or nothing exciting happened. Then they say they were robbed.
Not seeing how this proves that Rio authorities are on the up-and-up.

Yep. Here is what I think happened. Lochte was robbed by two men who he says were "dressed as police" because he doesn't come from a world where actual police rob people. Then the Brazilian authorities freak out. He never wanted this to be a story and certainly doesn't want it to be now. So he says they weren't dressed as police, thinking that will appease the Brazilian authorities and they'll back off. But it doesn't work. Brazil just doesn't get how it looks when you try to detain people for reporting a crime.

Ryan Lochte is not a smart man. He makes Phelps look like a genius.
He's smarter, faster, and richer than you... So I'd say he is fairly intelligent.
He's definitely faster and richer than me.

I believe this. Bad move because Brazil's actions here are bringing a lot more attention to a robbery that I believe really happened. Matt Lauer gave an interview to Costas last night after Lauer spoke to Lochte on the phone. It was detailed and convincing. Lauer concluded that it happened but Lochte may have embellished some of the details during the initial telling of the story. I suspect the men were very drunk when they were robbed. Details of the encounter could be hazy. Lauer also described interesting tid-bits of his conversation with Lochte, like how Lochte compared the questioning he rec'd in the US after his home was burgled to the questioning he rec'd from Brazil police after they reported the robbery. The police is Brazil were very casual and didn't ask for many details.

+1. I can't tell you how many interviews/stories I've read where Brazilian authorities are asked why the stands are so empty and they simply deny it and say they've sold 80% of the tickets or something like that. Really??? Look at the stands...they are empty! This Olympics has been a disaster...
I'm sure Lochte and the other swimmers were robbed. They probably didn't report it because they were drinking and potentially broke some rules by leaving the village in a cab at night, etc. Of course there are going to be discrepancies in their stories...even if they were totally sober, there would be discrepancies in their stories! This whole thing is a disgrace and U.S. authorities need to step in ASAP and get our athletes home!
