There were definitely far fewer people in the water than usual. We all went in the water, but did not even get to waist depth. Luckily, we were staying in Frisco, and the beach there has a consistent sandbar which forms a huge pool of water on the beach side of the sandbar. We spent tons of time in that pool. It was perfect for the kids, and the adults also enjoyed getting wet there without fear of sharks. Past the sandbar, no one went in past knee depth.
We also spent time on the sound side of the island.
As a PP said, avoid swimming near fishing piers.
And the Marine who was bitten in Topsail.
