That really confuses the point of this. It has nothing to do with the Federal Government. The point is that you can be punished for what you say...just not by the government. As in, you can be expelled from school or fired from your job if you say something against the institution's policy. However, you will not be arrested or charged with a crime.

I don't like the internet age of immediate hysteria and knee-jerk reactions. If these students were otherwise good students, I think singing a racist song on a drunken bus with no intent to offend (i.e., were minorities on the bus?), then expulsion seems over the top.

You need to rethink your insults, here. In this case it is government and it is potentially infringing on their free speech rights.

Hate speech is not a type of speech that has restrictions.

I'd love to see these entitled scumbags try and sue for "freedom of speech."

The best thing for them would be to withdraw from the school (or accept their expulsion), apologize for their actions & behavior, and attend another school after a year of quiet "reflection."

But they're clearly entitled racist brats, and will probably sue. It'll be entertaining as hell.

NP. Don't get me wrong, I think hate speech is deplorable and I won't lose a minute of sleep if these kids got tossed for it. But the idea that a university is a place where free speech rights don't apply is too rich to let pass without observation.
