You sooooo misunderstand Normcore.

Instead of continuously saying "that's not normcore," "you don't get it," etc., why don't you offer some concrete examples?

You have two hands and an internet connection. If you want to know...

Anonymous wrote:What is it about DC that makes the fashion here so boring and 10+ years behind NY or LA or other major cities? I've heard people on DCUM literally post that Uggs are still in. I cannot imagine someone walking around in DC with pastel hair, which is a genuine trend in most major cities in the country right now. If someone did that here they would be totally ostracized. I'm just wondering- what is it about DC that makes creative people stay away or expressions of creativity to be routinely poo-pooed?

It's mostly politics, lobbying, and nonprofit crowds here. Not fashion. Lest you be a little too informal or trendy, some bitch on facebook will call you out publicly for it. (I'm talking to you you, Ms. Lauten). That was not the first time and it won't be the last. Unless you're in a shapeless pant suit, you're not acceptable in DC.

I am a middle aged housewife and both my husband and I have worn "normcore" for years. ha. I thought we were the people making the DC area unfashionable?

This is one of the most ridiculous threads on DCUM, and that says a lot.

Yeah, Chicago fashion is awesome, like NYC or LA fashion. DC is just so dour in comparison.

Can you please give examples of these fashions. I'm genuinely curious! Give examples of some styles that are "fashion forward" that you keep seeing in these other cities.
TIA

Sea punk, normcore, vaporwave, soft grunge, all the goth subsets.... list goes on and on.

I dont even know what half these words mean.

Normcore has been around for at least two years, so I wouldn't call it "fashion forward" at this point, and... it's normcore. Really?

And it still isn't worn in DC. Which should just tell you how out of touch DC is.

I grew up in the DC area. My impression was that DC people want to look as if they are too important to care about fashion because it is frivolous. "Real issues" are at stake, in other words. Also, I think it is a trickle down effect of wanting to be as inoffensive as possible. Dress like the position you want, not the position you have - in other words, President. Who always has to wear a suit.

In fact, you could say that all of DC is rocking normcore. Happy now?
