The first pic is subway tile in a grid pattern, but the other two pics are not subway tile. Subway tile is a rectangle, not square. Prisons and hospitals also use white paint, faucets, and toilets but you wouldn't say that every bath that has those features is a prison or hospital.

No, they are not. Subway tiles are 3x6". They originated in the NYC subway system.

Google it.

Subway tile with contrasting grout has a very tailored, almost masculine kind of look. I think that's one of the reasons it works well in the bathroom above. It's offset nicely by the soft gray swirls in the marble, the glass knobs, and other, more feminine aspects of the room. The result is more balanced and not as frou-frou looking as the Saudi prince bathroom posted earlier.


To me it just looks incongruous.

How does a discussion about bathroom design = "people showing their privilege"? I may like an all marble bathroom and post pictures of it here but that doesn't mean I have one in my house or could even afford to have one in my house. Most of the examples posted are the kind of rooms I would design if I had unlimited funds--which I don't. It's still fun to talk about.

From the looks of the MLS number the marble bathroom in question is in mclean, not the midwest. I am not sure why you people think that anything new is from the midwest and consider that derogatory? Are most people who like old houses a bunch of judgmental a-holes who talk trash about places further away from the coast lines?
