I use Madison reed - I have medium/dark brown hair with about 10% gray which is concentrated around my face. every box I bought myself ended up looking reddish - I was going to the salon for about a year once I couldn’t stand the red tone but at $95 a shot plus tip I decided to give Madison reed a try to see if I could find a better color match. I love the color they sent me and while it’s more expensive than other at home color, I am sticking with it. It’s great that I can set the frequency when it ships and it comes with everything you need - the color removing wipes are awesome. The formula is thick enough that I haven’t gotten a single drop on my bathroom floor. And finally - the grays are well covered. I had selected every eight weeks but just switched to every six - I have a feeling soon enough will be every four

Some of my friends even remark how it is time to cover up my grey. One of my neighbors even told me not to leave the house looking that way. Geez....people are so rude.

And what do they look like? Total hotties I’m sure.

47 here. I do L'Oreal myself. You can start seeing roots at about 3-4 weeks (dark brown hair). I use med brown color so it isn't as harsh. When the line becomes noticeable I use L'Oreal touch up spray. It really does work but doesn't last as long as it says. I don't wash my hair every day, so I can limp along this way for a while. (Even to the 2 mo mark). Then, I may split a box of color and just do roots (sometimes, I guess I don't split it well, & it doesn't always take). But, the $10 box color is a small price to pay every couple of months.

To everyone who wants to color more and save money-
I’m 51 and been coloring my grey roots for about 10 yrs or more. I have a very short hairstyle and my hair grows very fast, actually I go to a mans barder shop and get a bald fade. I color my roots once a week with no problems. By the time there could be any damage my hair gets cut off! But what I do is buy Clairol Nice and Easy. I buy this kit because it’s the only one that I found that has both the color and activator in liquid form. This is important because I can take one kit and split it up into 6 treatments. Much better than buying a kit and throwing out most of what you don’t use. I’ve saved extra bottles so I line up 6 bots each and pour in until all 6 are even-you have to be able to see through the bottles to do this. I do it for the color and activator. Now I have 6 treatments out of one box and it costs me about a dollar and change to do. And then just cover up your area and try not to make a mess! It works great for me.

I have been colouring my hair since the age of 30 - am now 65. My hair was dark brown, but is now silver white. I have tried to do it at home myself many times, but it's such a mess, all the dark brown dye all over the bathroom, and scared it gets into my eyes. I even bought a special applicator brush - you load the colour into it, it has a nozzle with rubber tips with holes, press the button, and the colour comes out. It says "root applicator brush", but really is not very efficient for roots only, and best for doing only the whole head. Roots need a lot more skill. I go the salon mostly. My hair also grows insanely fast. 4 to 5 days is all I have, then see the roots. Touch it up with mascara until my next visit. 6 months ago was my last colour at the salon. I had decided to leave it to grown out. Guess what ? I have not left my house for six months. A bit due also to mild depression after I lost my younger sister suddenly in July 2017. I had not even seen her for 18 years, apart from a fleeting visit in 2013, where I only saw her 3 times. I live in Switzerland. It suited me fine at the time. But I'm now ready to move on. So, I have more than 4 inches of grey (silver mine is) roots, it's ALL my roots - my hair is just below my shoulders. My daughter and husband says it's lovely, leave it - what !! My hubby calls me Brigitte (for Brigitte Bardot, who has that white front to her hair, and is not even a brunette like me, but blonde !) And I feel like a recluse just like she is supposed to be. I feel old, I feel like a skunk, half black and white, all white on the top, and the rest black - well dark brown hair colour is nearly black, honestly. So think I'm off to the salon this week. BUT, you raised a question. Is it Goldwell changing the texture of your hair? My former hairdresser Carol, used L'oréal. My hair was always in tip top condition. She was the sole owner and worker, and retired. I then went elsewhere - everywhere uses only Goldwell. Except for very expensive salons. My hair has never been the same since I left Carol Coiffeur in 2013. So you could have a point about Goldwell. I'm not fan. They even have to leave it on for 40 mins, instead of 30, because otherwise the colour does not "take" and leaves me with a gingery hue.

To the PP who mixes her own color -- how do you do it? I am staring to notice a substantial change in the texture of my hair now that I color so frequently (I am 40 and have been coloring since I was 28.) Recently it has become incredibly dry and fly away. I am wondering if I'd be better off mixing my salon's color, Goldwell, at home or could it be the Goldwell?

I color my roots every 3 weeks and my whole head every 8-10 weeks. My grey roots start to bother me after 2weeks, so I use hair make up on my part for the last week or so between coloring. The make up is like an eye shadow that you brush on your roots. The brand is called “WOW”. It is a little expensive but it lasts a long time.

I've been able to stretch out my color to every 8 weeks by using this new product they sell at my salon called Color Craft. I think Redken makes it. It's a fantastic deep conditioner and it tones your color and helps cover greys. Your stylist mixes it up for you so you have the right color to use at home. It costs about $20 for a jar and lasts me the full time between salon colorings, if I use it once or twice a week.

I save a ton of money doing my own roots every 2 to 3 weeks.
Plastic root color bottle I got at sally's beauty supply.
I buy these Redken color gel products from Amazon:
Walnut 5NA mixed with Bamboo 7N with Redken 20 volume peroxide and leave it on 45 minutes.
I use more Bamboo than Walnut to get a lighter brown. You can do the opposite if you want a darker brown.
I like these shades because they don't pull red or brassy.
I coat my hair with coconut oil before applying the color.
I do highlights once a year at Aveda Institute. I would never use bleach at home.
Hope this helps

Anonymous wrote:Dark brown hair which began graying in early 20s, now 55.. Get color done every three weeks or silver roots become very noticeable and make me look like I'm balding. Stylist has a lot of experience with color and experimented with permanent and semi-permanent Schwarzkopf color until finding the right combination that is true to my original color. She will apply to roots for most appts and do full head as needed. I get a lot of compliments on how soft, shiny and natural my hair looks.

Can you please share your colorist's info?
