I like the trail myself too, but quite frankly, a trail that gets used by hundreds of people a day vs. light rail that will get used by thousands a day is a big difference. Sometimes sacrifices need to be made. This is one sacrifice that I am comfortable with, considering the other greenspace options. But with that said, I expect Columbia to fight tooth and nail again the Purple Line and this will drag out in litigation for years. The funny thing is that the country club is actually currently encroaching on property that is owned by the county.
The club is not the issue. People have bought into the rich versus poor argument that so often clouds the real issue: light rail will not best serve the transportation needs of the community. The whole thing should be put underground via Metro. This will get the most people going where they need to be. People get so fired up over the club (which has been there since 1911) trying to screw the little guy because that is how the Post has been reporting the story. Pay the extra money and have Metro do it right. Let's not forget that many homeowners will be affected as well with the so-called light rail. I don't blame the club for fighting for trying to protect its interests any more than I would a private homeowner doing the same. Let's get past the class warfare BS as mentioned above and do this thing right while saving the trail and the homes that would be affected.
Incidentally, I wonder how many light rail proponents would be for it if it came through their backyard? Let Metro do it.

Aint gonna happen anytime soon. Purple line blows.
yep, public transit in the area with the worst traffic in the country is a horrible idea!
Yeah, like light rail is the solution??? Metro should take this project over. Purple Line will destroy the Capital Crescent trail and many homeowners will be adversely affected. Great idea! And, I love the Post's class warfare coverage of the whole issue. What crap.

Anonymous wrote:I don't know if anyone on here has discussed the difference in initiation for social v full membership - From what I understand, a lot of younger families first join as social members, and then upgrade to full w/golf access ... Can anyone weigh in a little more on Columbia CC? I understand the full initiation there is $70K. I also find the discussion of the purple line going through their golf course disturbing - questioning whether or not it is worth the initial investment. Columbia does appear to be a very welcoming club in the area. Many thanks!

Columbia is not drawing many new members due to the uncertainity surrounding the Metro line.
Really? Are you on the membership committee at Columbia? Are you even a member? Last I heard, there is a substantial waiting list.
